A 30/30 doesn't have a great deal of recoil, but the way it does it, especially on a bony shoulder, hurts some

Don’t over look a .44 mag rifle. They’ll knock one down sure enough, and light punch to the shoulder. That with a scope with illuminating reticle would be ideal.

I'll second the recommendation of a 257 Roberts. When I'm at the gun range with half a duzen boomers, it's nice to shoot my 257 which is the lightest recoiling rifle I own.
It kills deer very well.

A .243 is a .308 class cartridge. It does need to be heavy to tame the recoil. I haven't seen .243s do anything a .223 won't other than give the uninitiated confidence due to the larger size of the cartridge.
If you want to stick with the current gun, add weight. Steel bases and rings, a heavy scope and as much lead as you can stuff in the butt stock will make a difference. It's just all a lot of trouble to go through when you probably already have an AR.

.257Roberts loaded with 100gr Nosler Partitions. Minimal recoil and plenty of horsepower for a pine goat If I was only hunting whitetails, either .257 Roberts or .25-06 would be my pick. Both kill way out of proportion to what they seem.

If it were me, I would sit down with him and look at the options he could have. Discuss the types of rifles that he could use and the calibers that would fulfill his search for something he feels confident using. At 80+ years old and he wants to hunt, get him what him, not only needs, but wants. Hope we get it read of his success in the months to come.

Have him shoot a 22 for a while to help with that flinch.

Might look at a 30 cal carbine with a large capacity clip. Ol fella that raised me killed his share with one well in to his 80’s.

.357 mag but you gotta hit the heart pretty much and 75 yds is probably the limit. Almost zero felt recoil. Ruger makes a nice bolt action or pick up a new Ruger/Marlin lever action .357 with side eject so you can mount a scope for the eyes. .44 has a bigger thump on the deer but the shoulder too.

My daughter killed several with a 30-30 and the Remington reduced recoil ammo. Last year we went to a 7mm-08 and the Hornady custom lite 120 grain ammo. She shoots a little Howa bolt action. It performed great. Good luck to yall and have a great season!

It's funny to see the lengths people will go to in avoiding a .223. I was iffy on it at first. It's hard to have confidence in the little cartridge until you watch a bunch drop on the spot. I cleaned I don't know how many my kids and wife killed with it before I tried it.
Anyhow, one thing that happens when people get over the hill and lose near vision, is muzzle blast can make them flinch even if recoil doesn't. The pressure wave hitting the face is startling. Long barrels and cartridges that aren't extraordinarily high pressure at the spout are worth considering. Linear compensators and suppressors on short barrels are good, too. If he's left-handed, shooting a backwards automatic may be an issue. It'll for sure be louder.
