Was at work when my 8 blood clots in my lungs acted up. Didn't really hurt til the Doc told me if I hadn't went to the hospital ida had 24/36 hours left to live. That scared me.

I’ve been in a few horse wrecks and had a pack of lumber get dropped on the back of my ankle but nothing too serious. When I was a kid my dad farmed catfish and had a few catfish in the seat of his regular cab f350. Well I hopped in kinda sitting on my knees and slid back. 2 of the fish’s dorsal fins went right into my right foot. They carried me into the er with 2 fish flopping around stuck to the bottom of my foot lol I used to move dirt with a tough man from Holland. One day he was welding the floor of a dump truck that had a heavy steel gate that hinged from the top. He had a skid loader/bucket holding the gate up while he welded on the floor of the dump bed. Well that skid steer had a slight hydraulic leak so eventually it dropped the swinging gate and it caught Jan in the back of the head and his teeth went straight into the steel he was welding. It pretty much peeled his face off from his top lip to halfway up his eyes. His whole face is made of metal now. That one makes me cringe

That guy's lucky he didn't bleed out....wonder if any of these millwork shops (or others) keep tourniquets on-hand for such occasions? if they don't, they oughta

T-shirt, belt, rope, etc...lots of items for a make-shift tourniquet.

I keep tourniquets in every vehicle, travel bag and job site I’m on.

Never been seriously hurt other than eyes burned a couple of times. Working at the mill in Brewton many years ago, we were pulling a spur roller at an angle and the lead man told me to watch out about the next beam and boom his finger got smashed inside his glove. Drove him to McMillian in old international service truck we had.

Didn’t happen to me but I witnessed it. Back when I was at Auburn, I worked third shift one summer at Diversified Products in Opelika making weight benches and exercise bikes. I was working a press machine at about 2AM when a guy in a forklift was loading a coiled rolled of steel on the machine beside me. Somehow the coil slipped and caught the operator in the legs. Snapped his leg in half and me and another guy had to lift the coil off him and call the ambulance. You talk about an incentive to stay in school…

Yep along with quick clot and Hyfin chest seal. You never know. I was fortunate enough to know a SWAT paramedic who helped me put a blowout kit together to carry with me.

had an oak ladder dropped on my head, owner said it was a mere flesh wound and I had to work the rest of day covered in blood. spit index finger into two fingers, burnt my whole face by a backdraft and was force to ride my harley to the hospital with skin peeling off. almost lost my leg when a self tapping screw punctured my knee and got staph. fell off a pallet rack and broke my teeth on the way down. eletrocuted one too many times, stepped on a nail and it proppelled 2x6 with a country nail towards my heart but I blocked it with my arm and it went all the way through (that was tough getting cleaned out). stitches a few times. I love maintenance, dispite all that I concider my self super safe and have never missed a day of work due to injury.

Blasting cap went off in my right hand at Redstone in 1980. Hand immediately doubled in size but still had my fingers. Had about 100 shallow shrapnel wounds. Shattered both lenses of my safety glasses.

The same man from Holland used to give me hell because I told him I would work on just about everything except for climbing/cutting trees and electricity. He said it’s a shame my dad never taught me how to properly fall a tree, I always used my excavator to dig roots and push trees over. Well one Saturday morning he called me off the 440hp Case I was running to watch his tree cutting tutorial. I’ll be danged if that oak tree didn’t spin off the stump and land right on his foot. I bet it drove his foot/boot 1 1/2’ deep into the clay. His leather boot looked like a sock his foot swoll up so much and we had to cut his boot off his foot/leg. I still won’t fool with trees or electricity

I knew a man who owned a few open station D3 dozers he had folks build commercial lots around Columbus, Ga with. He said he pulled up to one of the lots that his guy was clearing and saw the dozer facing away from him not moving with his employee kicked back like he was taking a nap. He said he was about to cuss that fella for all he was worth but when he pulled up beside the man he saw the issue. The worker was pushing a big oak tree when the branch he was pushing slipped off the blade and had him poked right in the sternum. The fella was stretched out as long as he could with his tip toe holding the clutch pedal. Said he would have been completely impaled if his toe would have slipped off that pedal

Lucky I guess. In 1999 I got into 7200 volts working substation maintenance. The voltage through me to ground blew 2 250 amp 46 KV fuses. Lost my right ring finger, it made the contact. The voltage blew out my right forearm. Through my body and came out my left hand. Med flight to UAB. I’ve had 11 surgeries on my right hand 2 skin graphs 2 nerve extensions 5+ weeks at UAB. I was dominant right handed but now left handed in most thing I do.
It was a communication error. The disconnects were closed to the source. I was not told or I wasn’t listening. Either way I missed a crucial step by not looking for air clearance before leaving the ground. The man on the ground got a good sunburn and hair burnt.

Accidents happen y’all be careful out there. Look at the guy in the mirror he is responsible for your safety.

I dropped a donut and threw out my back when I bent over to pick it up. Just kidding. I can honestly say in all my years of farming and being a LEO that all I remember is rolling an old Honda 300 off a rice field levee and my right knee getting trapped under it. I had no idea a knee could twist in so many different directions when I was trying to free myself. That one still bothers me today. That’s about all I can remember.

Full arm extension with a 30-ounce Eastwing claw hammer came down on index finger on my left hand. I chipped the bone in the finger, and I lost the nail. That hurt just as much as having my knee hyperextended from a tackle playing sports where I tore ligaments. I've been a trauma patient 3 times in my life, including getting shot by a crossbow arrow, but there are a lot of nerve endings in your fingers.

Jobs like we’re talking about will teach you a lot about how you don’t want to make a living.

2 years ago a coworker of mine fell 5 floors at the Graduate hotel onsite in Auburn. It was a crank up scaffolding issue. Hr returned to work about 6 months ago. Permanent limp and rated at 52 percent disability. They have placed him in an office position now.

Worst was pulling my back twice,awful pain and couldn’t move for days,took several weeks to get over both times,had some smashed fingers,rolled ankles and a few stitches, I’ve seen a few less fortunate that didn’t make it home to their families,my brother was severely burned years ago in an accident at work and spent 6 months in a burn unit,he was lucky to survive,accidents can happen in the blink of an eye in these mills so I try to be aware of my surroundings on every job I go to

Yup have a backpack with med kit and several tourniquets with me at most times. It’s on the equipment or in my truck at all times
Also had a pew pew in it just case
