My dad turns 81 in a few months and has hunted with the same Remington 7400 30-06 carbine for years. He missed 3 last year and killed one and about same year before. He has got weaker with age and has gotten a bad flinch due to recoil. He mentioned yesterday he wouldn’t mind a 30-30. Are the reduced recoil shells that noticeable? Other gun recommendations? I was thinking a single shot in maybe 7-08? Give me some ideas here. He shoots at 75 yards or less out of a blind most times.

Yeah I’d bump him down in caliber for sure. As far as reducing recoil, I think a single shot, even with the lighter loads may still produce a bit of kick. I bought a pump action .270 for me and the wife to hunt with. Recoil pad on the stock and reduced recoil loads made it so she didn’t get beat up by it. Still has some kick to it though. I’d think an AR platform in something like 300 blackout or 6.5 Grendel would be a good option. I’ve only read about the 6.5 so maybe someone with experience can chime in.

Reduced recoil would help a lot but they would not cycle in a 7400, would be fine in bolt action, pump or single shot, or use the 7400 as a single shot

.257Roberts loaded with 100gr Nosler Partitions. Minimal recoil and plenty of horsepower for a pine goat Good suggestion here. Another is the trusty old 243 Winchester. It's chambered in nearly everything out there.

You pick up a 350 legend single shot . Short lite low recoil
The 357 mag single shot i have works really well . Good luck finding ones of those though.

A CVA scout V2 in 300 blackout, with or without a can is my recommendation. Its what I started my girls hunting with very low recoil and with a can it would be pretty quite. They are light and mine is accurate, heck I shoot it when treestand hunting in timber because its so handy.

223, if he can shoot. 62gr fusions are deadly. If he cant hold the gun still, the 350 legend will certainly make a bigger hole with the same kick

I shoot 7mm-08 with 120g bullets in a 7lb w/ scope gun; very low recoil. Kills em' dead.

I shoot 7mm-08 with 120g bullets in a 7lb w/ scope gun; very low recoil. Kills em' dead. I use a 7MM-08 with 130gr Hornady- may have to trail 'em a bit but you will find a dead deer when you get there. Low Recoil

The reduced loads in .308 worked excellent for my boys when they were little. I believe the Remington load was 125 grains and the recoil was greatly reduced compared to a full house 165.

Don’t over look a .44 mag rifle. They’ll knock one down sure enough, and light punch to the shoulder.
