Looking on opinions how to handle a situation. Had a cell camera stolen about a week ago. Did a police report knowing that I would probably will never see it again. Went and put out an old broken camera and set up another camera on it. They came back last night and knocked over my feeder with about 300lbs of corn in it and took it. I have some good video that I will post later. My question is, how would you handle it? Get the police involved? Game Warden? Handle it yourself? I know what I want to do but it’s not the smartest thing to do. Thanks.

Police.

Next time, epoxy/embed an apple air tag on the feeder or whatever item they’re gonna steal. You should find out real quick when they take it.

This is probably not your situation, but I've read online several times where the items were being removed by the landowner or his agent. In those cases, the victim was mistakenly trespassing.

And since this is aldeer, I will state again that this is probably not your situation.

Don't try and handle it yourself. You are just opening up an opportunity for something to go sideways. Nothing gets at thieves attention like the popo.

I don't know what county you're in, but the right answer is Sheriff. That being said, don't get your hopes up. I had pictures of a guy that drove around one gate, shot the lock on another (unsuccessfully) and pulled another gate out of the ground. The property owner found the vehicle in the Walmart parking lot. The detective called the man and he admitted to the charge. However, everyone I talked to about it (Sheriff, Investigator, Circuit Court Clerk) were all extremely pessimistic about being able to prove anything. When I reminded them he admitted to it, they said he would just deny it in court. I finally dropped it. Of the folks I thought would be on my side, none were. It was like they didn't want to be bothered with it. Maybe the office in your county is different. I will also add that none of the parties involved at that time are still in office. All have retired.

got cleaned out last season and had pics of the guy who stole my camera (spartan ghost which has gps) and had an airtag in my blind. took 3 weeks for any officer to investigate. fun fact, a spartan ghosts internal battery lasts 18 days which pinged the entire 18 days inside their house by the property, they went looking for it on day 21. i did get my blind back but they destroyed it trying to get it collapsed. no one was ever arrested or anything legally done. fingers crossed for better luck on your end

The only time I've seen any enthusiasm from LEO's for theft of hunting items was when they had caught someone they were really trying to send to jail. Then they will call you asking about property they find on that person(s). I understand they have bigger fish to fry. However, I was told by someone that lives by my lease that one well-known local thug was cooking meth on the lease. I called the investigator and was told "Yeah, we've heard the same thing. The only thing I can tell you to do is put out some cameras and see if you can catch him." I expected more help when the person in question has a long criminal history.

That county needs a new sheriff.

I have a solution for you. Put another camera up, but this time, rub it down all over the inside and the outside and the strap with poision ivy. Just be sure you wear gloves. It will be the gift that keeps on giving. By the time he figures it out, he will have the oil all over everything and hopefully be itching everywhere.

You have to make it painful for trespassers. If the come in at night, old rusty barb wire can get them all tangled up too. I put a bunch of that out on a way people were riding around the gate at one of my hunting clubs. I just want it to get tangled up in their driveline.

The sheriff literally needs to see them breaking the law. It's frustrating.

Law enforcement typically doesn’t take any intrest in solving crimes or protecting citizens. There just isnt as much money in that as writing traffic violations.

Cell cams and homemade “spike strips.” Use short 6”-1’ board sections with screws/nails all through it so hopefully they will flatten all 4 tires. If you put 1 long board across the road they can usually feel it when the board sticks and hits the bottom of their pickup. They’ll drive around a bit if the short board has room to clear their tire well

If you got any good pics of them on your cell camera laminate it and tape their picture to all the stop signs/gas station doors like you’re looking for a missing person. That freaks a lot of folks out especially if they’re local
