I think the reason that a country gets attacked is either:

A. Some powerful, crazy leader wants your country's stuff.

B. You country is meddling in stuff they have no business meddling in.

I think in hindsight both of those things were going on when Japan attacked us in WWII. Japan had some pretty militaristic, nationalistic people in charge and wanted access to natural resources and were actively taking them. At the same time the US was actively trying to constrain them. We are basically doing the same thing to China right now that we did to Japan prior to WWII, except on an even larger scale. I think we call it the Containment strategy.

The United States has a very long history of meddling in affairs that we really have no business meddling in. Each time we justified that it was all in the name of National Security. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I can't think of a time that another country attacked us, because they wanted our land and our stuff. Being separated by two oceans helps a lot.

I think we need to decide if we...

A. Want to live over here in peace on a heavily defended island.

or

B. Want to be the World Police and every time some other country does something we don't like, we send our boys and girls over there to fight and die.

The problem with the "A" is that none of us that is alive right now remember us ever doing anything other than "B" and to do anything else would makes us seem weak.
