Southbamayslayer, here’s the job posting. Every position under the commissioner has to go through the hiring process, and every position is selected based off an interview committee or interviewer, so whether the term appointed, selected, chosen, etc is used they all must follow the same hiring guidelines as a WMA technician to be employed. Every position has some type of selection or appointment, but it’s not the same as the appointments being made above the Director, which do not have to go through the same process. They don’t even have to show qualifications. They just say “I declare this person as Commissioner because I want to”. That’s a different process altogether. ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/LXjWjKF6/IMG-7193.png)

Brae is right. It’s not an appointed position. They’re hired through the normal state process. The job is posted on the personnel website and a selection is made. They very well may know who they are going to hire beforehand, but they must follow the same hiring procedures as any other state position. This is straight from Alabama law….AL Code § 9-2-61 The Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries shall be a division of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and shall be headed by and be under the direction, supervision and control of the Director of the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. He shall be appointed by the Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources with the approval of the Governor. Yeah, that’s also the first thing that comes up for me if I google it as well. But it’s not a just “pick my buddy” appointment. It’s open to anyone that meets the on paper qualifications to apply and it’s a normal hiring process as with the jobs any of us had at DCNR. Anybody can go on the state personnel website and apply. Once chosen there’s an a final approval and “appointment” by the commissioner.

Bottom line as I read it, they have to go through a process, however insignificant, but are appointed to the position. My question is, are they merit system protected? Generally, they would be having gone through a process that is supposed to produce the most qualified candidate, but, when the word appointed is used in the example SBS cites, that would tend towards the serving at the will of the Commissioner. Appointed positions generally aren't merit system protected. That is all I was trying to find out.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I hope the new one isn't as big a liar as the one who just left.

Lol. She's good people. You have to keep her in check sometimes though. I'm sure she'll be along here shortly to flip me the bird. She's going places one day if she keeps up what she's doing.

I've heard enough and seen enough about you to know that you'd be a perfect fit for the job once you get some experience.....and you've probably already had enough experience. I'm just here saying what most can't. Go get em.

I dont know him per se, but I have met on different occasions when I was doing work for Auburn and NRCS. Those times he seemed reasonable and didnt do anything that bothered me.

He was/is the assistant director. He is just "acting" director until the position is filled.

He’s acting. Not the permanent replacement.
