AU338MAG I guess it’s different in different places. All the people I’ve ever hunted with have been the other way.

I was meaning slowly walking through woods, frequently stopping and such. From reading the replies I think some call it stalking. Either way if anyone has tried it, has there been much luck? I’d think rainy days/ damp days would be best so you wouldn’t make much noise

Yes I’ve done it on windy days and wet days. Can be successful.

If you plan on jumping deer those are the best times or windy or breezy days. But most of them you kill will be on their feet moving. Don't look for a whole deer look for parts of a deer. Ever few steps is a new view . If you jump a nice buck dont just think he'll run to the next county . He wight just circle you . Move to the left or right he may just run over you in a little while coming back to his home . You need to know the land really really well


Thing about doe groups they like staying together . I have jump groups of does and young deer . If the scatter them ever which way id just set down a little futher ahead and kill what ever came back looking for the others .

If you in pretty thick stuff a kee kee calling on a mouth call a little dont hurt either. ,,,, softly

You need wet leaves is a big help to move quietly. Look for something horizontal in a forest where most everything is vertical. A good pair of binocs will help pick out an ear etc of a bedded deer. And don’t get in no hurry. Move slower than slow. Make sure the wind is in your favor. My favorite way to hunt. I hate sitting still for hours. Two biggest I’ve ever shot were on cold very windy days

And yes technically it’s called still hunting but that has never made a lick of sense to me so I’ve always called it stalk hunting 👍

Always in to the wind, use your ears as much as your eyes.

Big reason I haven't tried still hunting in years.

A deer could sneak up behind me and tap me on the shoulder my hearing is so bad.

No it is when you get old and you run into one of your old buddies you ain't seen in years. During your conversation you ask him is he still hunting?

When I was cutting my teeth in the woods as a kid/teen, still hunting meant stationary on the ground or in a stand. Stalk hunting was slipping through the woods during a light rain or after a rain when you could be quiet in the leaves. It still does.

At my age the knees are gone. I find a nice view where I can see 100 yards, clean about a 3 foot diameter and lean against a tree.

Yeah I pop and crackle to bad to walk to far. Knees are next on the lists after my hip

I remember one frosty morning sitting on the bank watching a creek bottom with my grandfather. He had his trusty Marlin in 35 Rem and a green Stanley thermos of coffee, I had a Stevens double barrel. I was one of those fidgety kids like they showed in Lifesaver commercials. He looked at me and gruffly said “Be Still”, a life lesson that has made me the ultimate hunter and successful in my Military career. I’m alive today many times over I believe because of this lesson.

Yeah, wet conditions help. You can also be reasonably quiet in stands of pines. I've shot a few deer still hunting but it was as much chance as anything else.

Still Hunting = Yankee slang for stalking.

Where I grew up hunting in Ourtown, AL -

Stand hunting was where you got dropped off before the dogs or Jugman were turned loose

Still hunting was easing thru the woods and stopping here n’ there to sit still and watch

Stalking was something they did on Sunday morning Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom
