This is straight from Alabama law….AL Code § 9-2-61

The Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries shall be a division of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and shall be headed by and be under the direction, supervision and control of the Director of the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. He shall be appointed by the Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources with the approval of the Governor.

Yeah, that’s also the first thing that comes up for me if I google it as well. But it’s not a just “pick my buddy” appointment. It’s open to anyone that meets the on paper qualifications to apply and it’s a normal hiring process as with the jobs any of us had at DCNR. Anybody can go on the state personnel website and apply. Once chosen there’s an a final approval and “appointment” by the commissioner.
