wife wants a whole house stand-by generator.
what make, size, etc. Need to go propane.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

We install them. Generac. Square footage of house. Appliances. I should be able to size it pretty close

Generac. I would get the smallest one with the auto crank feature. I think it use to be 10 or 13KW. If you dont lile a new indtall price, watch gov deals, they have them pretty often. Be sure to get the transfer switch as well. I would imagine the install price will be higher if you go that route but if you have a buddy that could put it in, you could save enough to make it worth while.

I’ve been thinking about this myself. My opinion is if you are gonna spend the money spend a little extra and make sure you run the whole house even the hvac.

Generac’s product line is changing. I believe those very small units have been discontinued. Anyhow, a 13 kw would produce a peak of 54 amps on 240V. If it were me, I would buy once and cry once. 26kw with a 200A transfer switch without knowing anything else.

You’re saying 10-13kv will run the whole house? I am not an electrician, but work related I have several properties that I manage with generators. I know that a 28,000 square foot facility with two kitchens, bay doors and 20 plus offices with a lot of IT equipment on an average day pulls about 33 KW. I am sure it peaks more than that at times. With that said, we have a 200 KW there. I am more than confident a 100 KW would be enough to run it. I am confident the 13 KW would run my house and lights in the 40x80 shop as it is in a daily use. If I wanted to run the air compressor, use every light, empty both water heaters, cook a meal, use the microwave while the wife is drying her hair, I would want to get the peak usage pin pointed before I made a purchase.

I put in a 24KW Generac it will run the whole house with heat or air we do have a gas stove and double oven though everything else is electric.

I could be wrong, but I think the average house draws a little over 1 kw. Of course it spikes when using appliances that are off unless manually turned on. I think a loy of chicken farmers can get by with a 30 KW.

I install them for a living. I’m partners with a guy who is a sales and service dealer. 13kw should in theory run your house, but bumping up to a 24 or 26 allows you peace of mind of being able to live life uninterrupted. I believe the increase in price of the generator is only $1500-2000. Install price and material stays the same. Customers never say they wish they’d gone smaller.

If you can afford it, get a “water cooled”, glycol cooled.
Just like your truck, car.
Typical 2-3000 square foot house should be able to survive comfortably with 15-18kw. May not run everything…..survive,Yes.
Keep in mind different fuel types produce different capacities.

As long as everything doesn't start/peak at the same time. I think most refrigerators run at 100-130. Again, no electrician, just basing what I have seen on a few specific cases.
