For us, dinner and supper are alternate terms for the evening meal. I did grow up around some folks who referred to the mod-day meal as dinner, but I never did.

Breakfast and lunch were the first two. I mean, school had a lunch room, not a dinner room, and it was staffed by the lunch ladies, not the dinner ladies.

I have been to both dinner parties and progressive suppers.

If you get invited to dinner at my house, it'll be after 6. If I say barbecue, then that's what we are eating, not the act of smoking meat to create barbecue. Burgers and hot dogs is cooking out or grilling.

Not true.

This ^^^.....I heard dinner used a lot on Sand Mt

I've lived most of my years on the Southern end of Sand Mountain and #3 is what most people around here use. We like it simple and if someone invites you to dinner, you don't know whether to show up around mid-day or around dusk. Are these Dinner folks from around the Yankee end of the mountain? grin

Breakfast=you automatically know it's in the morning
Lunch=automatically mid-day
Supper=always in the evening

It's SMS-Sand Mountain Simple

Now to throw a wrench in the works: Sometimes, well, fairly often at my house, we have Breakfast for Supper. laugh
