House I grew up in was an original Log 2 story dogtrot style over 200 years old. Family cemetery is still there but I have not been to it in years. Some of the graves date back to the late 1800's. Many are illegible now. As a kid I remember a family from Texas coming to visit to see the cemetery. One of the men died and as the story goes they "Pickled" him until family from Texas could return for the burial. The story of the pickled man was supposedly the ghost that haunted the house. Was it my imagination or was it really haunted? I dont know, but I had friends who would not spend the night there more than once.
My grandfather has 3 brothers buried in the cemetery at Jack McDowell cove in Bankhead. Im sure Mbrock and others know of it. Best I remember, one was still birth, one died shortly after birth, and one was 10-12 and was run over by a wagon wheel and died. My Dad is the genealogist and has visited 100's of cemeteries all over the south. In college at Athens state we did a lab in the cemetery across from the road and I spent days there researching death/birth rates by decade. It was pretty cool to be able to tie those rates back through history based on the world events and diseases at the time. Great story. Thanks for sharing.

Cousin has a slave cemetery about 300 yds in the woods behind his house. Must be close to 100 graves, most just marked with a rock or some kind of brick. Some have a name or initials, maybe a date. There are 4 with tombstones, one from 1928 and the last person buried there was in the 50' or 60's I believe. There is an old woods road that comes in from the other side of his property for any one that wants to access, might find some flowers there every 10 years or so.

You should make a ride on your motorbike one day to Dallas County and go to Old Live Oak Cemetary and the one in Old Cahaba. If it is during a time when I will be back I will be glad to give you the backstory on many of the OLO graves. Really fascinating. Or go during Pilgrimage weekend when they do tours and have actors in costume at the graves to tell the story of the person buried there.

You should make a ride on your motorbike one day to Dallas County and go to Old Live Oak Cemetary and the one in Old Cahaba. If it is during a time when I will be back I will be glad to give you the backstory on many of the OLO graves. Really fascinating. Or go during Pilgrimage weekend when they do tours and have actors in costume at the graves to tell the story of the person buried there. I think I have been there. That whole Cahaba town is seemingly very creepy for some reason and I'm not usually creeped out by anything.

There's a lot of old family Cemeteries way back in the mountains in Paint Rock Valley. Folks used to live back in the mountains and try to scratch out a life. Many of them made whisky .

That is an awesome final resting spot with all the Spanish moss. I try to always stop and walk around the older ones if I have time. I remember one from my younger years I think it was around Clayton ala. One was shaped like a whiskey bottle and said “lived by the bottle and died by the bottle”.

Cool headstones and surrounding scenery! I happened upon an old cemetery in Kansas when taking a mid day break from a really warm day of bowhunting. The oldest markers were for the O apostrophe Irish that first settled that area in the mid/late 1700s. There were some fantastic headstones and then there was the brief supernatural experience that I had and will never forget.

Thanks for posting this, there is a cemetery on Lake Martin at New Hope Church, my wife find it very intriguing.

I'm not big on cemeteries. But I do remember as a child, going to an old confederate cemetery and cleaning it up with the entire extended family. Probably 50 of us.
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

I can spend hours amongst the dead, reading markers, praying, reflecting, daydreaming and in general, just recharging my batteries or thinking about my own existence. Cemeteries are some of the most peaceful places I know. OK, now here's the weird part. Fairly often even if I never knew the souls to which the bodies belonged, I can feel a sort of connection to some of them, almost like we were friends.

Always enjoy the old cemeteries in the smokies. The old elkmont cemetary there in the park is a sad place to me though. Most of the graves were are children that died in 1918 from the flu outbreak. Pretty cool cemetary on a knoll if y’all ever up there and want to check it out. The Old Sugarlands cemetary is pretty cool also it’s about a 5 mile hike or so from the big visitor center there. Several of the original founders of gatlinburg are buried there.

2 old cemeteries just outside the town of Gainesville ala are very cool. One is called Old Fellows I think. The one on the other side of town I can’t recall the name but it has a bunch of civil war graves and there use to be a cannon there supposedly gotten out of the tombigbee river nearby. Not sure on the hx of the cannon but it’s a cool story anyway. Not sure if the cannon is still there or not it’s been years prob 10 years since I last went to it.

Irish when yall make it back over to Natchez let me know, my club is 8 miles from Vicksburg, old cemetery with some confederate gaves in it but a small family plot of a father, wife and child, supposed to be northern sympathizers that Sherman stayed with! cool spot, I love to turkey hunt around both spots, kinda fells like someone might be hunting with me!

Neat story and pics. Glad to see Irish posting his adventures again. Staring at a headstone makes me wonder what that person was like, especially if they were kin. Spent a day visiting gravesites in Wilcox County a few years back and sought out one in Texas that was a grandmother to me. One of the headstones pictured above may be kin and now I’m going to *have* to go down the rabbit hole to see what I can find. Guess I know what I’m doing this weekend now.

I read all the posts and enjoyed them. Before I married my wife I made her promise me she’d throw me off Hobdy’s bridge after I was gone. Since then she’s redacted that promise and I reckon I’ll get buried in the middle of my favorite pasture. Same pasture we got married in. I want my headstone to be just high enough in the grass where my son/nephews/cousins will hit it with a bush hog every now and then

Just go to the cemetery in Shiloh . It gives me the chills every time . Any one want day trip from anywhere in north al needs visit the Shiloh park . I go a lot because I live close . Have family there .

There used to be a fraternal order by that name. At one time was one of the largest in the world, haven't heard of them in years though.
