I'm not about to add a suppressor in the immediate future, but may do so eventually (especially if they deregulate them as is [again] being rumored)....at any rate, what's involved in adding one to a rifle that didn't come threaded from the factory?
The rifle in question is an older (2006ish) Savage model 11 .308. It has just the standard diameter barrel, not a heavy barrel. Can that barrel simply be threaded to accept the suppressor or would it be cheaper to just re-barrel to one that is pre-threaded?

Depending on what suppressor you get, there are adaptors you can purchase to step up whatever thread pitch you have on your barrel to the thread pitch or attachment system of the can. If it's 5/8 x 24 or 11/2 x 28 thread pitch on your muzzle that's an easy fix depending on your can.

If it's 5/8 x 24 or 11/2 x 28 thread pitch on your muzzle that's an easy fix depending on your can. This one isn't threaded at all. I guess my question is "can any barrel be threaded or does it need to be a larger-diameter barrel to have enough material to be threaded? And even, is it worth the cost to have it cut/threaded or would it be more cost-effective to just rebarrel to one that comes threaded?

Cut/thread is cheap & easy assuming you have enough meat on your barrel. I think the Thunder Beast website used to have barrel minimum thickness dimensions for the various barrel threading options. Can't check at work due to internet restrictions that block sites associated with firearms.

It’s not uncommon to chop and thread a full length rifle barrel. If, for instance, you had a .308win with a 22” barrel but the barrel profile was not quite right at the end for a 5/8” thread, but it was correct at 18ish”, it wouldn’t be uncommon for your smith to cut it at 18”, re-crown and thread the barrel there. This would not only stiffen the barrel a bit(handy with a suppressor) but also make wielding the length of the can a bit less awkward.

Having your barrel threaded is no big deal, it's just getting expensive these days. A place I've used in the past went from $100 a year ago to $175 this week. That's a big discount on a whole 'nother rifle.
If I wanted a threaded Savage, I'd just buy one. That's assuming I didn't know a Smith who doesn't expect more than one shop hour to do a simple job.

You can buy a heavy threaded barrel savage for a little over $400. I also bought a 300blk AR for around $400. If youre gona spend $1000 on a silencer, you just as well buy a gu to put it on
