Nows the time to hit your privet before everything else starts to bud out. You can blanket spray a area with herbide and at this time of the year, your not killing all the understory and ground cover plants that you want to keep under the privet because those things have not greened out.
Not all privet will have held its leaves but usually 60% or more (warm winters) of it will still have green leaves to take in the herbicide. I use a tree sprayer from northern tool. Its the best way ive found to get rid of it. I just use Glyphosate. And try to do it on a warm sunny day before the first of march.
Yes you can spray it anytime of the year but i prefer to keep some ground cover there vs spraying in summer and killing everything leaving large bare areas. Also seems like if i leave the natural ground cover and other small upcoming trees it helps to discourage privet seed growth.

Where do you buy it and will it kill my grass?

Gly will kill grasses. I use triclopyr and 2 4 d mix. 2oz a gallon on both. You can do imazapyr but its soil active. Maybe Mbrock will chime in and give his recipe. I think he mixes his a little stronger. what's important is full foliar coverage. Dont spray one side. Get all of it

Those that have Dallas grass in their yard can be hitting that now with fly, also hen bit. I know the bees won’t like it, but hen bit can take over a yard and your wife’s flower beds.

Use gly @ 6 oz/gal and Triclopyr @ 1.5 oz/gal for privet. The cold week we had has defoliated so much of ours I’m not spraying until mid June this year. Like chiller said, complete foliage coverage is required with both of those mixes. Winter spraying is fine as long as it retains leaves. That didn’t happen this year.

Its Gly time for your yard if its Bermuda. I usually spray Gly in Feb to knock out the hen bit and other unwanted stuff. My crabgrass has become resistant to just about anything I spray in the summer months. The best thing I ever did was spray a pre-emergant in early winter. I have used Prodiamine last winter and back in December and it has done wonders.

Unless it’s a bunch of ground level volunteers, I’d think a basal application would be better for privet. I’d think some Garlon 4 and diesel or basal oil would knock them out more dependably.

I read that privet is good browse for deer? Is that true or not?

In areas with poor habitat they’ll eat every green leaf on it. If you have a browse line on privet two things are at play. They are poor habitat and too many deer for the habitat you do have.

Privet will just take over and you can’t walk through it quietly.

I laugh when I hear the word crabgrass. Ole boy back in high school nicknamed a girl that after he got the itches. She beat the shit out of him under the smoking tree in front of all his friends.

Also a good time to spray stuff in a Bermuda lawn while it is still dormant. I had a fescue issue I dealt with a few years back.

Same here. Mine has defoliated. On the bright side, I can see through the woods very good right now and my chainsaw has found some crap to cut down.

For big enough yes. I have so many sprout whips of it 2-3 foot it wouldnt work for me. The tree sprayer is about 4gpm and will cover a wide swath getting all the little stuff.
