Look at the era GM was making S-10s and Ford was making Rangers. Count how many of those you see on the road now versus Toyotas of the same era. Ain't even close .

My 98 tacoma has over 400k and all I have done is oil changes, brakes. The biggest thing that has broken was the alternator. Had it rebuilt and still going. Everything still also works, ac, cruise etc. I can’t complain one bit.

98 is a good year , I've had several from 96-99. My brother has one that era bought new , it's rough but runs good and probably has around 400k on it.

I sold my Tacoma at nearly 300,000 miles. Only problem i had was the drive shaft going out at around 250k. I still see it on occasion around town.

You do a lot of burn outs?

Short diversion here..... The toughest truck i remember was an old king cab Datsun. I used to feed cows and fix fences with that little truck.
It was 2wd with big mud tires on the back. Wasn't a straight body panel anywhere, it was a rolled wreck but it never gave up. Back then odometers reset at 100k so I have no idea how many times it rolled over but it must have been more than half a million miles. Finally parked it when I broke the frame hauling a 1500# roll of hay across a rough pasture.

I've never had one that didn't get to 200k with zero repairs . Currently have a 4RUNNER with 251k that runs like new but i have changed out a lot of the suspension parts but nothing done to engine or transmission. My brother bought a older Tacoma off here for around $3500 because it had 420k miles on the original engine and transmission. He put new shocks and struts on and sold it for $7500. He happened to be looking at Marketplace a week later and the Hispanic guy that bought it from him changed the dash cluster out to show 160k miles and had already sold it for $13k. I doubt any new Toyotas will be that good but all I've had 11 Toyota and Lexus products and they were all exceptional trouble free vehicles every day I owned them.

I know where theres a 04 or so tundra with over 500k on it two years ago and the lady still drives it every day. Mine is just a little over 200k and a few front end parts is all ive replaced. Probably need to consider a timing belt i guess

No, lots of steep hills and lots of rock. Creek crossings and ranch work. It’s usually the suspension that starts going on me. Underpowered Tacomas seem to be worst driveline wise. The bigger trucks hold up motor and driveline wise but suspension starts crapping out before small toyotas.

Tacomas are the easiest over my terrain but they don’t hold much more than a lunchbox and a rifle and uncomfortable and pokey as hell.

I have a theory that the DRIVER makes a big difference on longevity of transmission and front end components.

Driver is irrelevant on my roads, 2-10mph is all you will hit

Toyota drive lines ( axels , diffs , drive shafts ) hold up better than others. Reason, they are built heavier for the amount of HP coming to them . The diffs and axels are = or built heavier than a Dana 44 , most vehicles running 44s weigh more and have way more HP going to them. That's been Toyota's strong suit since 1979 when the first 4X4 trucks were sold in the US.

Yeah. Some people just hate on Tacomas for whatever reason. If you don’t like them, that’s cool. A little too small, I get it. But it’s ridiculous to compare the maintenance and longevity to any other truck on the road. They’re dang everywhere, all year models all over the place. People search high and low and pay whatever all the time. And most every hunting camp I manage land around has a coupe older, really beat up models still poking around the woods.

My Tacoma has been through hell and still alive. 05 with 300k

By what you are saying - you are using a truck like a tractor - and essentially getting 10,000 hours out of it. From something not designed to do that. I say that’s a win.

99 auto with 2.7 334,000. Synthetic fluids since 150,000 has helped I think.

03 taco blew a head gasket and cyllinder at 317k miles
