are there any free apps that do some of the basic functions that OnX and Huntstand used to let you do for free but no longer allow? Basic things like save pins/waypoints, satellite views and maybe show topo lines?
I used to use the free version of OnX for that, because I either hunted on private land and already knew where the property lines were, or hunted so far into public land that I wouldn't get anywhere close to a property line, but the free version of OnX is totally useless now

Most county probate offices have gis maps now that you may take a look at. Some have aerial photo layers you can choose. Seach the county name and "gis map" for the link to the one you want. It may take a little getting used to, but I figured most of it out that I needed to.
Take a screen shot and use a photo editor app to add waypoints and notes or whatever you want.

I haven’t used it in a while, but MotionX-GPS did what you’re describing. As most decent apps go, it may be fee driven, now.
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

Google maps does pins and satellite but no topo. As long as you have good cell service this works well.

The below is a possible solution.
You can download the Moultrie Mobile app and use its mapping and weather software for free. I am not sure if that will change in the future or not. I just tested with a new account, and I was able to access the maps, drop pins of different types (trail camera, tree stand, shooting house, and about 40 other options), draw an area, draw a line and create map views. You can download the app and try the demo account to see if it might fit your need before putting in your information to create an account.

Avenza maps app. I think there are free maps you can load into it. I used Caltopo’s webpage to export an aerial and topo geo-pdf and then imported those into Avenza maps.
