Ok if they make surpressures legal , no tax. can I take a short barrel rifle and pemermantly attach a surpressure so barrel is legal length and have a legal rifle

Or

Would I still have to pay the tax on a short barrel rifle .

What you are looking for is either an “integrally suppressed weapon” or having a suppressor blind-pinned and welded to your short barrel. Either can create a situation wherein you need a single stamp as the barrel and can are a single unit. If the combination still does not meet 16” you may still need an SBR stamp depending on configuration.

If it’s pinned and welded I think you’re good. It works with flash hiders and muzzle brakes that get the length to 16”.

Is this a AR or a bolt rifle?

I’m probably getting in the weeds here;

Both SBR and Supressors require a stamp and from my understanding, once an SBR is registered an SBR, it’s forever an SBR in the eyes of the ATF since the serial number is in that system (may be a way to deregister, but juice probably isn’t worth the squeeze)

BUT; you can chop/pin/weld and existing non-SBR rifle (say with a 20” barrel down to an 8”) to immediately & permanently attach a supressor (that gives it back the technical length to be considered a Rifle) and then you’re good to go.

He may be thinking to use a brace if you're considering an AR to avoid the SBR issue.

Suppressor is PPE for shooting to save hearing, no reason it should be regulated by the ATF the way it is.

It’s all Crap. They should be able to be bought at the hardware store or gun store off the shelf.

And the length of my barrel is nobody’s business laugh

That sounds like a complicated way of saying integrally suppressed rifle of a legal rifle length. That's not a SBR. I'd do an AR straightpull or Blaser R8 if your pockets are overflowing. That way you're not stuck with just the one suppressed barrel. Contenders and Encore would work as well.

I’m curious as to where all this is heading. I’m hoping the tax stamps won’t be in play soon. There’s so many work arounds but they’re a pita

I’ve been enjoying shooting more so than hunting lately and the AR platform is very interesting to me. 12.5 and even 10.5 barrels suppressed consistently hitting steel at a 1000 yards.

Like mentioned if it’s pinned to the barrel then the overall length is what matters to get it to 16 inches.

This is an interesting concept. From a practical standpoint a 16" AR with another 6" of suppressor hanging off it isn't too long for most uses. And bluetooth ear muffs are pretty good on the target range. (I'm talking myself out of having a barrel made here.)

So....if you had a Super 14 Contender barrel on frame with a rifle stock, you are in violation of Federal law but if it had a permanently attached muzzle brake that extended another 2"+, you are good to go, right?

Right. People do that to 14.5” ARs all the time.

If a person fills out the Forms and has a Gun Trust and gets the $200 stamp, do you have to carry the stamp with you while hunting or just going to the range?

Id take all paperwork everywhere it goes. Electronic is fine for suppressors, and am sure it is for SBRs too.
