I interpreted Frankie’s comment as “I’m out” when it comes to talking genetics. 🤷🏼♂️ Matt, what % of the yearling bucks are going to disburse? I was under the impression that essentially all of them do if the mother is still alive, but they will stay on the property if she is dead. Is that correct? If it is, that's gotta be one of the most important factors to consider in trying to grow big bucks. If you don't kill any does, then 100% of your annual buck crop is gonna leave, no matter how good your habitat may be. And the only bucks you will have will be those from neighboring land, of which you have no control. If that's the way it works, then you need to kill some does in order to keep some of your bucks. It illustrates why you can't use cattle management ideas with deer. We go fairly heavy on doe harvest and have noticed a sharp increase in yearling bucks with 6-8 points over time. Right now I’ve got several food plots with multiple buck fawn orphans because we’ve killed a lot of their mommas. I can almost pick out yearling bucks that were born here and the ones that’s dispersed here from other areas. They’re night and day different. Some are 85-90 lbs with short spikes (dispersed here) and others are 120+ lbs with 6-8 point racks 10-12” wide (born here). But yes most bucks disperse 2-10 miles within a year or two. Our objective is to retain as many bucks as possible born here, because they’re born earlier, to healthier does, in better habitat, and express better physical characteristics than fawns born elsewhere.

Good stuff in this question and why I would like to keep as many buck fawns as possible that were produced from high quality habitat whether I’ve truly triggered a full epigenetic response or not.

I think it depends on your location. If your land is located in an area with good soil and if you can effectively manage it you can probably kill more doe's. I'm on land I can't effectively manage with a ph of 4.8 to 5, and with no predator control. I need higher fawn recruitment rates to get my density up, and more $ in terms of dues to keep the ph right.
I've also shifted tactics to not trying to cull funky rack bucks.
