I’ve sat and watched deer a couple of times this year, didn’t shoot. I shoot a deer when I want a deer to eat.

Cheaper to buy beef from the grocery store and a lot less work but t sometimes I want deer.

Philosophical answer: it's a direct connection to the past... as one of my favorite authors Robert Ruark wrote in *The Horn of the Hunter*:

"The hunter's horn sounds early for some, later for others. For some unfortunates, poisoned by city sidewalks and sentenced to a cement jungle more horrifying than anything to be found in Tanganyika, the horn of the hunter never winds at all. But deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club, and then with spear, and then with bow, and then with gun, and finally with formulae."

I have transitioned to alot of sightseeing trips carrying a rifle, putting my two boys in the best spots, but not too many years ago I was in it for the sheer thrill of the hunt as Ruark described it above. One of my favorite ways to feel the rush is sitting on the ground, back against a tree, flintlock cradled in my folded arms, waiting for the prey to happen upon the creek crossing or other pinch point I scouted. 50 yds, 40, 30, 15... eye to eye. Looking past the iron sights waiting in anticipation of the prey to present a clean shot. I still get pumped thinking about it.

My boys and I will also shoot them with 308s in a food plot. A little less intense, but also a little more predictable and successful. We love fresh venison.

I enjoy many aspects of hunting. Being outside, the solitude, watching animals in their environment. I also enjoy killing the right deer. Don't care about immature bucks. I also like the meat so I try to kill one deer a year to stock my freezer with ground meat for cooking.

I also want to kill a big, clean 10 point. I've got 3 eleven pointers on my wall.

Maybe one day...

I hunt because I LOVE IT and even being selective with what I shoot whether its elk, blacktail, or whitetail, my freezers get a couple hundred pounds of meat a year. This year I put a blacktail and 1 1/2 elk in the freezer., we rarely buy beef.
Towards the end of summer I'll give some meat away to make room for new.

I love going, it is a need down deep in the soul. I like killing stuff. I like deer meat. I love the sound of my hounds doing their job and seeing the excitement they get from it. The sound of a gunshot in front of the dogs, and knowing that others are getting the same thrill me. I have helped to create addicts of young skeptical hunters when they killed a deer in front of my dogs. I enjoy making habitat improvements and seeing deer use it. I like to see deer munching on the grass I planted. Headgear is a bonus, but has little to do with the reasons I am there.I would shoot every damn one if I could, but I know that would be bad for the next year, so I mostly wait on a good buck, and kill enough to fill the freezer.

If I never shoot another deer I will die happy. I’ve killed enough. I still hunt though. I get more joy taking my 9 year old on trips to the woods and showing him things I was taught by my elders.

I don’t but I did like eating them and manage to get a several each year
We have an over abundance of does at the farm and those guys like shooting them.

Got a pic of two small spotted ferns the other day

I spend a lot of time outdoors because I enjoy it. Deer hunting is another way for me to enjoy the outdoors. I kill deer purely for meat. We just don’t buy much beef at all. I usually put 3-4 deer n the freezer and that lasts pretty much a year. I’ll shoot a buck or a doe all based on body size. I want the most meat for the effort.

I will also add that I have seen so many wonderful things while deer hunting, and that really adds to the experience. The way our farm sits I can’t hunt by the river, or in the fields and bottoms, or on the mountain. Each one delivers a different experience. I find it relaxing, a stress reliever, and educational. Time well spent.

I love being outside in the woods and seeing the beauty that God created. Plus I love the mystery of the not knowing what I might see when being in the woods.

I was born with it in my blood. Something in my DNA made me want to hunt. My dad wasn’t a big hunter. The occasional Union Camp dove shoot was about all he did. I wasn’t raised in a deer stand but I asked for a gun when I was 12. My most memorable Christmas gift was a Winchester MK II 20ga shotgun. It’s a real low end gun but no amount of money could get it from me. I actually used it last year to shoot some squirrels.

When I started hunting, it was all I could think about. My dad would take me all the time. I would look forward to every Saturday morning when I would shake him awake to go. At his funeral I spoke about the fact that he never once said “no” when I asked him to go hunting. He worked in the woods 6a to 6p every day but would get up at 4 on Saturdays to take a 13yo kid to the squirrel woods. The thrill of shooting a squirrel was genuine for me.

As I moved into my late teens I was able to go on my own and tried deer hunting. It was a struggle but I finally killed one. A 4” spike and I might as well have been a 180 BC buck! I still get excited when I shoot one!

So the long answer to a short question is I like to shoot deer. The culmination of countless hours of preparation to see a deer, to set up in a position to see one, and to finally pull the trigger and put one on the tailgate is a great accomplishment for me. It still thrills me like that 1st squirrel in 1978. I probably see over 100 deer a year but kill maybe 2 or 3. We eat a lot but we give away most of it to patients, family, friends, who need it.
