collapses while under construction early this morning. Not good!!

https://www.fox10tv.com/2025/01/27/...lity-collapses-while-under-construction/

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - What has been completed of the new indoor athletic training facility at Gulf Shores High School collapsed early this morning.

The building has been under construction.

City officials said the collapse happened between 4 and 5 a.m. and that there were no injuries.

An investigation is underway about why the collapse happened.

A new high school is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2026. It is not known at this time if the collapse will push back the target opening date.

Major structural failure probably from non compliance of support beams. Glad no one was injured and the builders risk insurance inspector will probably be on site real soon. If not already.

I would probably just turn around and go home.

Framing houses about 25+ years ago and we had just got all the rafters up on a large house but no decking yet. Storms came through that night and when we got there the next am the whole roof was down. It was a sickening feeling.

Seen it before. The contractor will blame the designer and the designer will blame the contractor. In my experience, it’s usually the contractor but will it will take some time to sort out.

Looking at the debris it appears to be a Pre Engineered Metal Building. Engineering design is done by the metal building manufacturers on this type of structure. The structure was probably not fully braced and there was a high wind event.

A little moment of movement can create a surprising amount of domino effect.

Snow weight could have shifted it , so it wouldn't take much wind

I would certainly rather it happen now!

Let's see what the insurance company says.

Had a big ag building near me have that happen. Some life long injuries and a death was involved. Took years for the courts to sort that one out.

We hang structural steel, not so much pre-manufactured, but from the looks of the picture they had the skeleton up. You can see on the big beam in the picture has all the clips on top of the beam to bolt the purlins to that weren't installed yet. I imagine they didnt have much bracing installed yet and you would be surprised how much these frames will move until the X bracing etc is installed. Im not sure the wind was high enough down there yesterday morning to blow it down regardless of how much bracing was installed, but something failed somewhere and im sure it went down like dominos. I doubt the issue was the steel, more than likely on the installer or possibly a foundation gave way (which isn't likely).

Very accurate summary of potential issues 👍🏻

So much misinformation on this thread.

Like I speculated in my earlier post, this was caused by inadequate bracing being installed. They had too many columns installed before bracing the structure. Once one section started to shift it went down like dominoes. This was confirmed to me today through a subcontractor working on the site.
