A guy i work with just bought a new Chevy. He shopped around a got a much better deal at Donahoo in Ft Payne. You can get better deals if your flexible on the truck you want to buy. and from where. Some I know have gone all the way to Louisiana to purchase trucks, well they bring it to them. We use a guy that goes to auctions for our vehicles. Buy one two-3 years old, save a ton of cash. If your son has 1/2 a down payment on new, I bet he could pay the whole thing off with one from an auction. But if he spends all his money on a used truck without a warranty he won't have any money for repairs . So it’s better to spend almost double for a warranty? We don’t.

If people don't buy new trucks there won't be any used trucks to buy...

Tell him to buy used and invest the rest. I feel obligated to say the same. It probably won’t do any good but at least give him the advice. 10k invested from age 20 to 60 at 12% is about $930,000. Add to it over time and he won’t have to work his whole life like most of us.

I have suggested that very thing and he is thinking about it. good advice for a young man, if he's paying less than half price. But especially for older men there's alot bigger reasons to buy new lately. say you do pay half the price then if your lucky you got a truck with 100k miles. trucks on average last 200k miles. so you paid half the price to drive a truck on the worst half of it's life. then you get to repairs which is mostly warrenty on the first half of it's life. And then there's making sure you have something solid to get you to work. And yeah the fairy tale that it's a toyota so it's probably gonna last 400k is a myth. toyotas are very expensive parts and a quick google search showed that less than 4% of toyota tundras go over 200,000. thats the real numbers. so rolling the dice paying half the price to drive the worst, wobbly worn out miles may not be the best for everyone.

Very true! The older I get, almost 69, the less I want to fool with a break down off somewhere.

Find someone that does the auctions, I have one I trust in Montgomery if you need it.

If he spends all his money on a used truck and it breaks down next week, where will the $$$$ come from? If you can afford repairs, it may be worth saving and buying used.
