At work we have a “see something, say something” policy with safety. Speak up when you see a dangerous issue. This is one.
I teach my kids to always use a flashlight going in and out of the woods in the dark, especially crossing a rr track or road. Orange does basically zero in the dark. I don’t even think about my orange leaving the stand, I focus on shining my light in directions where I think someone could actually be sitting or walking. If a Gamewarden was waiting at my truck, he’d see my flashlight hundreds of yards before he ever knew if I had orange on or not. After or before legal hunting light a flashlight should suffice, period. In my house I mandate it. Technically all hunters would be safer with that same rule. Just a fact.

Is this an issue? Are people getting shot in the dark?
I don't use a light because I don't want people to see where I've been or going. I guess I spent too many years running off trespassers. Got to be sneaky.

The point of wearing Orange is to be visible, for safety, correct?
Dusk and dawn is the most dangerous time of day for visibility.
Maybe I’ve spent too many years hunting in town around everybody and their uncle.
Freaks me out thinking about my kids walking down a logging road or crossing a rr track right at dawn without being seen.

I use a headlamp with a red light mode. Enough light to see walking in/out, and I always like to look or shine it around walking out into open spots in the off chance someone decides to pop one off after legal shooting hours.

I purposefully don't use a flashlight whenever I can get away with it. I don't want to loose my night vision and I don't want people or animals to know where I am. If its cloudy/ moonless I'll use a red light but never turn on a white flashlight unless we're gutting/ draggin one out in the dark.

While I always wear orange to and from the stand, I agree with the use of a light. My dad/uncles drilled that into us, always have a light when walking from the stand at night (a penlight will suffice). Why, because no deer or other North American animal totes a light around with them at night, so the chances of being mistaken for one is about zero if you have a flashlight. I've always hunted deer on private land, but I'd be doubly sure to have one on public land or where trespassers are common.

I hunt public land so I'm typically going into the woods well before daylight and while I have my orange on, it's not visible. It's black dark when I come out so same thing. I do use a flashlight going in and coming out so I can been seen and not shot by some idiot who sees or hears something moving in the dark plus it's really thick in a lot of places I hunt so you definitely need to see.

Has the DCNR been formally made aware of the problem? The law says they aint allowed to use Aldeer unless the idea is formally submitted.

I always use a green light before the morning hunt and after the evening hunt, i dont want to take a chance of an idiot poacher mistaking me for a deer especially in the afternoon after legal shooting light but before it gets completely dark. On the other hand i see these people on Youtube walking in turkey hunting using a light, that i would never do. I feel there less chance being mistaken for a turkey in the dark than a deer. I also primarily hunt private maybe i would consider it on public.

Do folks hunt railroads in your area like powerline right of ways?

I mostly hurt private, never use a light unless I’m tracking a deer. Never felt like I needed one. Messes up my night vision.

I have people who live next to the tracks and next to me. All it takes is one time and one mistake.
I’m just using that as an example though. Roadways, power lines, gas lines, clearcuts that join a neighbor would be more dangerous.
I know a guy who shot a cow for a deer one early foggy morning. Killed it dead.
I had a friend when we were 16-17 shot a stump at daylight. Swore it was a deer and it moved.

We never use one turkey hunting either. Didn’t someone get shot with a cross bow not long ago, at daylight or dark? Pretty sure I remember it on here.

I have a strange vision prescription which is why I notice a lot of odd things like that. My solution. I small led clip light on your clothes. They can see your little light, but it dont bother yourself.

If I have my kids or a guest I will use one. If I am hunting near our property line and/or a club road I will use one.

I use a light also on private land. And yes people have been shot after dark without a light. The father and son in Auburn years back comes to mind. I think it was his buddy that killed the kid, said he thought it was a coyote.
