From what I read just in the past couple days, there have been several large egg laying operations that have had some infected with the bird flu. When a few test positive, the whole chicken house has to be put down (in reality, probably every chicken on that property). It takes 5 months for a chick to mature to laying age and it is reported that it isn't just the normal grocery store egg providers, either - it has hit some of the cage free operations and organic operations as well.
I feel like there are those who have either been in the chicken business or who currently are would be able to explain it better, though.
I do know that regular old large white eggs at Piggly Wiggly in Andalusia were 9.38 for an 18 count yesterday.

The bird laying the egg is a different bird than your eating. 2024 over 17m layers have been depopulated due to HP AI. Broilers are fixing to go up due to HP AI + flocks of broilers and Broiler breeders . Just depopulated 45,000 in north GA this week and more to test + I’m sure.

Heck you can buy a chicken already cooked at the local grocery store for what you would pay for one uncooked. Something screwed up with that Yup. Either lost leaders or chicken going out of date are salvaged so it’s not a total loss I’ve heard both explanations and both are feasible

Poultry is Alabama's #1 agricultural commodity and we are treated like indentured servants. They only care that we have plenty of credit, land, and intelligence to run these multi million dollar farms which barely cash flow.
