I don’t get the idea that folks throw out when they say “I don’t need the state telling me how many deer to shoot!!”…..
Yes you do……That is the very reason we have a DCNR that sets season dates and bag limits……because the public needs someone to set those limits for them……If you think you have the right to decide how many deer you should be able to shoot then why don’t you have the same right to deer hunt any month of the year you choose as well?.....
I wouldn't hunt in the summer even if allowed to do it. Frak hot hunting

I would be in full support of shortening the overall season and limiting the number of bucks to 2. These deer would be more plentiful, older armed easier to hunt if they weren’t hunted damn near half the year.

Who said that? I said I don't need the state to tell my neighbors what size buck to shoot or how old they have to be.

If everyone in Alabama was on board with managing for big mature whitetail, we would probably be shocked at what we started killing in a few years! I think states like Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Texas are more inclined to do this. I would certainly be on board! You might think that by but you'd be wrong. The reason the Midwest has bigger deer is agriculture and very limited gun seasons. Lots of Alabama hunters think if they could just get government to stop their neighbors from killing young bucks they'd have big bucks running everywhere. The truth is most of those same folks complaining aren't willing to give up their 3 month gun season in exchange for more mature bucks. There is a misconception that Midwest folks have more restraint but I have read numerous studies that indicate the average buck killed in Illinois is a 2 year old 100" deer. Human nature doesn't change by geography. They slaughter the young ones too but they have a shorter window to do it with a gun. If you wanna see more big deer lobby for a 1 or 2 week gun season that falls outside the rut. I bet that dog won't hunt with most of the whiners and complainers. In Missouri they kill around 150,000 bucks a year. In 2023 Alabama killed 140,000. We have about the same number of estimated deer in each state. Since they kill more deer in Missouri than in Alabama with a shorter rifle season, and they kill mostly younger deer (if Missouri is the same Midwest rule as in Illinois) it would seem that the season has no affect on it. It seems genes and agriculture is the issue. Am I wrong? Am I missing something? Or maybe the info I got from google in deer numbers is wrong?

Who said that? I said I don't need the state to tell my neighbors what size buck to shoot or how old they have to be. The state can manage for any end goal they choose and if they choose to manage for better age structure then they have every right to tell your neighbor which bucks they can shoot……I don’t think that everyone should be allowed to run a muck doing as you please to the point that no one else is able to manage for anything other than mediocre…..This isnt Texas……Neighbors matter and they have an impact on everyone around them…..They shouldn’t just get to “do as they please” with the deer herd just because they leased a few acres to hunt

The tax payers do. You might like and need more government restrictions to kill the kind of deer you want but I don't.

Home range size varies so much by individual the only way to know is by placing a GPS collar on one.
It’s also the reason I keep saying that bait, cameras and long seasons are NOT going to work long term in some areas. If you have a buck on camera there’s a guarantee that 10 other ppl do too and somebody is out to kill him and they will. It IS impacting age structure in some places to the point that mature bucks are no longer making up any measurable percentage of the population, which is terrible deer management on a population level.

I don’t look at deer management rules created by the DCNR as “more government regulation”…..Their whole purpose is to create rules to manage the deer responsibly and if change requires them to adapt the rules as time goes on then there should be that flexibility to do so…..Not this idea where we never make any changes PERIOD!!!.....That’s just a retarded ideology to adopt knowing that change will most definitely occur over time……which has just happened......Baiting has created change.

That's all fine but I still don't need the state to tell my neighbors what size and age deer they can kill. You're welcome to keep lobbying for more government intervention if you feel it's needed because it won't affect me either way.

tell you what go by the deer processer near you and just ask ,,,, you getting in any good deer in ? when he say yeah ,,,,, think about it . maybe just maybe you need to learn how to hunt .

Big fat no to everything you just said. I fought for no extension in areas where current season framework allowed hunting the rut, was not in favor of bait, was not in favor of how GC was rolled out or how it’s being used, and you can’t kill what don’t exist. Me personally, don’t have a problem killing mature bucks, but there’s a lot of ppl who are having trouble for no reason other than over harvest of middle aged deer. Add the threat of CWD to the mix and the days of having older deer to hunt are done if nothing changes. Now, you visit a taxidermist in your area and you’ll see a pile of decent deer in the 3-4 age class, but the 5+ yo bucks are not nearly as common as they were when harvest was random.

yall doing the same thing to turkey hunting . Who is yall? You can’t just blanket cover all hunters under one umbrella. Having concerns over population management is the only reason we have anything today. Hunters are the ones who petitioned for change to promote thriving wildlife populations for future hunting opportunities.

Winner!!! Que, "I can't get no satisfaction". The states job is to maintain a "healthy" deer herd, not "trophy" deer herd.

After running a quality deer hunting club for about 10 years I realized it is impossible, absolutely impossible to reach a consensus of happy hunters. Utopia doesn’t exist. Everybody's viewpoints are different with what’s a trophy in their eyes. Then there’s the cull crap folks can’t get past. 😝
I always think back to when the state was pushing ARs on a few WMAs up here, Waterloo and Thomas. I think it was around early 2000s. They had a public meeting when Forever Wild was buying a lot land to be included in WMAs. I’d called several state senators in support of the proposals and the reasoning behind those thoughts. I was a big QDMA proponent
There was a group of bios from Westervelt and made the statement. They like to keep their lease to 10 members or less. The more you add the more problems you have.

They’re an excuse to shoot one. Not gonna make a difference in a free range situation. What about that doe throwing those cull bucks, how is she identified? Had a good friend make mention years ago, you turning free range wildlife into livestock. He wasn’t far from wrong
