Yes. Some woods are more suited to rifles. The woods where I hunt are more suited to a shotgun and buckshot. Where I hunt, if you can shoot 80 yards with a shotgun, it will cover 90% of the opportunities you get. Though a rifle would technically cover 100%, hitting a deer running flat out in thick woods is difficult. One of the most difficult shots I've made on a deer dog hunting was on a buck that was crossing a road tight enough that the bushes scrub both sides of my toyota when I drive it. I shot him twice crossing that road at 40 yards or so. Some might could have done that with a rifle, but not me.

My point is if that factory buckshot that is labeled #4 buck is actually smaller than 24 cal (which it likely is) then it technically wouldn't be legal by your definition (or the DNRs). If I had one laying around, I'd cut one open and find out. I don't have one laying around because, for deer hunting, IMO #4 buck is trash. If the fact that the manufacturer labeled it #4 buck makes it legal, then maybe a manufacturer will start labeling their shells "T buck".

I also wander what the answer would have been had you asked a different GW. If Alabama GWs are anything like Florida GWs, if you ask 5 the same question, you'll get 5 different answers. That is a job that requires a lot of discretion.

I just moved some stuff around in my gun closet and a Federal #4 buck shell fell out of the bottom of an old grocery bag full of loose shells. Like it was meant to be! I cut that sucker open and it is bigger than 23 cal, but not quite 24. What now?...

Shooting T’s and F’s for deer hunting is the equivalent of shooting 9’s and 10’s at turkeys. When the TSS turkey rage started, these were illegal too but now a lot of states made them legal. The TSS buckshot will probably follow suit.

No thanks. I don't hunt with buckshot in Alabama, for the time being anyway. They'll probably have it straightened out by the time I do.

Who wants to shoot one with a bird load anyway? There is a reason for a certain size pellet. Where I am from buckshot is illegal and if am glad it is.

Me. I do. It is very deadly within its range limitations. Much faster and easier to hit with than a rifle. What you are calling birdshot will extend the range of a shotgun beyond what was previously thought possible.
