I am by no means a rifle snob but I had one of these and it wouldn't feed worth a crap 3 types of ammo. It was the second Axis I had owned, between owning the two, I had also forgotten about the long bolt throw that likes to beat up my scopes. I'm just done with the Axis line personally. They did shoot well enough but dang the down side. My first Axis was a .243. It was fine other than the 90 deg bolt throw and banging my scope on a fast reload.

For what it's worth, I bought an Axis II (better trigger than base Axis) 350 Legend and kept the factory installed Bushnell scope on it. I sighted it in myself in only 5 rounds. On thanksgiving weekend, my daughter dropped a doe at 130yds with having never fired it before (she is 24yo). She loved the low recoil and performance it did on the doe. She wants this gun as hers in future hunts.  So, in my opinion, looking for an affordable and accurate gun with low recoil? Savage Axis definitely fits the bill. I did notice the scope mount screws were a bit loose, but I think they do that anticipating that buyers will relocate the scope. I simply tightened down and used locktite before going to the range. As far as complaints with the bolt action, I haven't had any issues with loading Winchester target rounds or their Deer XP rounds. The bolt handle does come close to the factory installed scope, but does not hit it.

Ive never noticed the bolt on any of my guns hitting a scope. I have several variations of the savage axis, all are compact. Trailertrash said he was bolting fast and i generally dont do that. I dont shoot alot. Usually sight them in then hunt with them. Most havent been shot hut a few times. I usually bolt pretty slow. I also usually go with medium or tall scope mounts which i guess would move the scope a little further away from the bolt. I will start paying a little more attention to this. I know they arent high end guns but all of mine shoot really good and i like them. Thats why i recommend them often to people looking for a descent price gun that shoots good. Im pretty rough on stuff too.

I do tend towards higher than normal magnification (bigger scopes usually) and always mount as low as the objective bell will allow on bolt actions. I'm sure that is most if not ALL the problem but if the OP does the same with his rifles I would look at something else. Just a heads up... I've shot three different calibers of a axis and had no problems . Id buy one any day . I heard some people don't like the stocks on them though but as for shooting I've heard no complaints.

Don’t want to hear the trash talk but my grand daughter shoots a 6.5 Tikka . I’ve had great success using 140 grain federal fusion . No recoil . Be careful buying a ar in 350 legend ,as they don’t like to cycle .

I started my son out with a 350 legend in an AR due to the adjustability for his size. I built a bear creek upper and psa lower, I think all in with scope I was only 500-600. Great gun for 125 +\- yds. Never any issues with the gun, feeding, cycling etc. he has moved up to a 7mm-08 now and in hindsight I would have started him there if he hadn’t needed the shorter LOP. The 7mm-08 has less recoil than the 350L.

What’s the allure to a 350 legend?
A .243 seems like a better caliber for kids and has a much farther range/flatter. But I’m not super familiar with the 350 legend.
