Im no mechanic by any stretch but usually try to work on my own stuff. Maybe a bad Solenoid switch? Is is a Ford? I ask because I replace a couple of those on older Ford trucks. If you do find a Solenoid on the fire wall or fender you can jump post to post with a couple screwdrivers and it will crank IF thats the problem. I know some vehicles have the Solenoid on the starter.

Been there done that, listen to hopper35005. Get up under there, hit it with a hammer, or go in another vehicle to buy a starter and change the it. I have been stranded before, an old mechanic happened to come by, crawled under it hit it and it fired up like a champ. 1998 Z71, I learned a lot that day. I've had to replace several starters, the last time I learned O'Reilly's has a 3 year warranty on starters. They've replaced one in 3 years. They go out fairly regularly, 465,000 miles. I've replaced 5-6, one didn't last a year from either advance or auto zone, I couldn't find the receipt, they couldn't fine me in the system, my fault for not finding the receipt, I don't deal with them for anything more than fuses and small stuff now. hopper35005 is right on this one.
