Load test the battery to make sure that you're getting the proper CCAs out of the new one. Just last month I had battery on my truck that was showing full charge and acted fine 90% of the time, but would occasionally drag when trying to cold start. Wouldnt fire off, then after the third or fourth try, it would spin up perfectly fine and fire right off. I ran up to autozone and threw it on their tester which will load it and the 850 CCA battery, showing fully charged, was only actually putting out 510 CCAs which was/is barely enough to turn it over. I'm guessing there was probably a little burr on the starter armature and if it was in a certain position and hung up slightly, the fully charged but weak battery wasnt producing the CCAs to spin through it. As others said, check the grounds first and make sure all are tight and clean, and I also think on those 97 z71's there was also a starter specific solenoid. Could be that it is going bad. Intermittent electrical issues are the most frustrating problems to chase in the automotive world.

The brushes in the starter are worn down too short. Sometimes you can tap it with a hammer and reseat the brushes. just wore out.

I'd start looking at ground wires. Is there another one to look besides the one coming straight off the battery??.....I'll go inspect it again but that one looked fine On a 1990 chevy, one goes from battery to fender, battery to engine block, back left side of engine block to frame and another from frame to cab. My guess it grounds, either clean or replace

Starter be my guess, if the cables are connected good to the battery. Especially if it's hard to crank after it gets hot...

Found out today on my 94, there is a ground behind the passenger side cylinder head, when it's not connected good, the windshield wipers won't work......

Check the battery with the volt meter next time it doesn't crank.

My first thought was a starter. I have heard it called starter drag. This happens when the truck gets hot from driving and starter bushings expand and drag, thereby making started to turn slow. I have actually poured water on a hot starter to cool it off, then it would crank normal.

Replace the starter. I am a mechanic, I do it for a living.

Im no mechanic by any stretch but usually try to work on my own stuff. Maybe a bad Solenoid switch? Is is a Ford? I ask because I replace a couple of those on older Ford trucks. If you do find a Solenoid on the fire wall or fender you can jump post to post with a couple screwdrivers and it will crank IF thats the problem. I know some vehicles have the Solenoid on the starter. Chevy z71 Been there done that, listen to hopper35005. Get up under there, hit it with a hammer, or go in another vehicle to buy a starter and change the it. I have been stranded before, an old mechanic happened to come by, crawled under it hit it and it fired up like a champ. 1998 Z71, I learned a lot that day. I've had to replace several starters, the last time I learned O'Reilly's has a 3 year warranty on starters. They've replaced one in 3 years. They go out fairly regularly, 465,000 miles. I've replaced 5-6, one didn't last a year from either advance or auto zone, I couldn't find the receipt, they couldn't fine me in the system, my fault for not finding the receipt, I don't deal with them for anything more than fuses and small stuff now. hopper35005 is right on this one.

Either the battery cables are corroded internally, or the ground point to the block is dirty. Tight cables don’t mean a thing if they’re tightened down to a dirty connection.
This or a battery would be the first things I’d check. If it’s new enough to have the fuse block on the battery that would be next. Then a starter

I replaced the starter and the battery one time on my kubota and it turned out to be the ground. Got a good used starter on my shop shelf though. 😂
