Gonna take my old truck in today but just thought I’d get some opinions here first on the possible issue……It’ll crank just fine for 9-10 times in a row….maybe more…..Then out of the blue you’ll try to crank it and it acts like the battery is dead…..giving it that slow “rrrr…rrrr….rrrr….”…….I’ve been lucky so far and been able to get it to crank and get home but it about left me stranded last night……I thought at first it was just a loose battery cable but they are good and tight now and its still doing it……The battery is brand new……Its not going dead so I don’t think it’s the alternator…….Its never had a starter put on it that I know of and its a 97' with a 160K miles so I guess that could be an option but I’m leaning toward something with the battery cables… I don’t see anything visibly wrong though…..

What say the aldeer mechanics?....Is that indicative of how a starter would act that was going bad?

I'd start looking at ground wires.

More times than not, it’s the battery.
In all my diagnosis of vehicle cranking issues, any slow cranking goes back to the battery.
I know you said it’s new.
You have a bunch of accessories that could be pulling the battery down, even while it’s setting?
Could be loose belt affecting the alternator or a weak alternator especially in a 97
Not the starter.

Is there another one to look besides the one coming straight off the battery??.....I'll go inspect it again but that one looked fine

I don’t think it’s the battery because that was my first thought too….I actually went and got a new one and the lady warrantied my old one and gave me a new one since the one I took off was just bought last year…..It actually wasn’t even bad….So its done it with two different batteries.

Im no mechanic by any stretch but usually try to work on my own stuff. Maybe a bad Solenoid switch? Is is a Ford? I ask because I replace a couple of those on older Ford trucks. If you do find a Solenoid on the fire wall or fender you can jump post to post with a couple screwdrivers and it will crank IF thats the problem. I know some vehicles have the Solenoid on the starter.

Either the battery cables are corroded internally, or the ground point to the block is dirty. Tight cables don’t mean a thing if they’re tightened down to a dirty connection.

Put a new starter on yourself. They are not particularly hard to replace on that truck. It's going to need it soon anyway if not right now. Youtube will walk you through it.

yeah it's possible it could be a connection issue but usually that would cause a click and not a rotation. iam thinking the batterys being drained while sitting. I would do and amp draw and make sure its under 50 mili amps leakage.

Sounds like the starter to me. They can act up then start working fine but always replace them at the first sign of acting up.

Had a 99 f150 that would do that. It was a loose ground on one of the transmission bolts. New battery and new starter later, just was a loose bolt. I’d make dang sure to check the grounds sure enough.

Check the ground wire on the towing hook up.

I appreciate all the input.....It at least gives me a starting point to look like I know what I'm talking about when I take into the man... grin ..Its gonna be cold again this weekend so I really need it ready to go by then.....I kinda think y'all may be right about it being a ground....I got some good folks who work on it for me so I have confidence they'll do right by me whatever it is....Fingers crossed she cranks one more time...

I’d clean the battery terminals and cables before I spent any money.

GM had a run of battery cables that would corrode under the insulation (forget what years). Cheap and easy fix... just buy a couple new cables and replace them and see if that helps

At least you get the " “rrrr…rrrr….rrrr….”. Mine won't make any noise when I turn the key on a random basis. Wait about five minutes and turn the key and it fires right up. Driving me crazy. Won't stay broke long enough to find it.
