It's no longer enough to remain profitable year-on-year, companies now feel like they need to grow year-on-year (often with 15-20% growth being the goal). And they know they have the American consumer over a barrel because there's no escaping it. A consumer, in most cases, can't bail on a company for doing it because the competition is doing the same thing.
