I haven't hunted with a slug gun that often. I may be going to a state that is a shotgun only area. How often must you clean the barrel of a slug gun? Typically, I don't like cleaning a rifle barrel (in season) unless it gets wet. A deer's nose is his lifeline and that solvent can be smelled for a long time.

My fully rifled Hastings barrel stays pretty clean but now and then I use Ballistol and a bronze brush to clean the plastic sabot material out of it. Ballistol is not very smelly.

Well, my gun is an 870 with a 20" barrel and it is pretty light for a 12 ga slug gun so it has some brisk recoil with my handloaded slugs but I usually "enjoy" about 10-15 rounds and clean it when I finish. My barrel does not change point of impact whether clean or fouled. That is something I would check when you clean the barrel. If you are concerned about the smell of the solvent, you can run a patch of rubbing alcohol through it when finished. It has an odor but usually vanishes after it evaporates .
