8% of the spikes and 4 pointers in Jefferson County have been killed. That's how I read that map. Less 5 year old bucks than Black Panthers in any given county in this State.

You can't eat dem horns...

you know what I'm saying?

Updated Maps 12/2…….

Just a reminder to anyone who’s following along with the numbers that these percentages are being compared to the 4 year average…..I’ll make a 5 year trend line at the end of the season that will better show this year’s numbers compared to the other 4 seasons

Deer are dropping in record numbers around here. I bet the final reported harvest at the end of this year will be 20% more than previous years. I’ve never seen processors shutting their doors opening weekend and the week of Thanksgiving. A lot of them did this year. Our processor took in over 130 deer opening day.

Which county or counties are you referring to?

My local processor had to stop taking deer this weekend.
Long days and nights for them right now.
They’ll be a lull after people get their freezer deer.

I’d be careful about basing a “record harvest” on just what you see at the processor….. It could be that hunters are just having more deer processed with the price of groceries being high…..Looking at the data those counties are really not any further ahead of their 4 year average than many of the other counties…..We’ll see how it progresses though……A lot more does being shot right now than bucks in most areas

Something else about the processors is that I got a feeling that more and more hunters take their deer to processors these days than what used to…… Hunting has become a higher end hobby for folks who have the money to pay someone else to process it for them……..There’s been 3000 does killed so far between those 4 counties, not even counting bucks……That’ll fill up some processors if everyone is trying to get them processed…….The 130 that came in opening day works out to 3% of the total that have been game checked in those 4 counties……I’m just saying that I wouldn’t be putting a whole lot of stock into whether the processor is having to shut down because he got 100 or 200 deer in……There’s obviously more people wanting to process deer than the processors have capacity for……..

Just out of curiosity........Have there been any processors shut down in that area in the last few years??.....Reason I ask is because that's something else to consider when looking at an increase in business for the other processors in the area......There's also the quality of service to consider.....Is your processor seeing an increase in business because they do better work than the others??......These are all just reasons why I'd be real careful about judging changes in the actual deer herd by looking at the amount of business being done by any given processor....Give me a minute and I can probably think of a few more.... grin grin
