Take which rifle you like the best regardless of caliber. There ain't enough difference between those two calibers to cause heart burn.

There ain’t a deer walking this earth that can read a cartridge head stamp. Shot placement and type of projectile used will have a far greater impact on performance in the field.

Every out of state hunt I've ever been on, I have taken a back-up gun. To much time, effort and money go into to getting there to have a problem with firearm and no back-up.

When i hav shot my 2506 and even 308 - blood trials take some time to find and with the 2506 - they were even worse. I hav not shot the 08 - but my 270 leaves by far the best blood trials of the 3 i mentioned. Somebody above mentioned this that had shot both which is what i would expect is the 270 likely the best blood trial

I have both. Been shooting a Abolt .270 for 20+ years with 130gr Core Lokt PSP's and it's a flat killer. Just bought a Bergara 7mm-08 a few weeks ago with intentions for my 7 year told to shoot it and it become his rifle. I bought 120gr Federal bonded soft points and it shoots them good. I plan to shoot several deer with it myself and see how it does. I went with 120gr in hopes to save a little recoil for him. He doesn't seem to mind it so if the 120's don't seem to do good on the deer I'll bump up to 140's.

I haven’t seen any difference in blood trails with either of them. They’ve all produced great blood trails for me.

If you sight in the .270 about 2.5 inches high @ 100Yards you can shoot out to 300 yards with no adjustment just put the scope on the deer and pull the trigger. That's called sighting in for the maximum point blank range.
Similarly a 7mm-08 with a 140 grain sighted in 2.5 inches high @ 100Yards has a maximum point blank range of about 285 yards.
If you didn't know what you were doing and decided to shoot a Super Duper Magic Bullet that was lightweight and "faster" in the 7mm-08 say a 120 grain. Then the maximum point blank range would also be about 285 yards. That's where most people get lost they believe if they shoot a lighter weight bullet they can shoot further or something is happening that isn't.
Both excellent choices for whitetail deer, but there are a lot of misconceptions regarding ballistics and how to setup your rifle.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

I've got my .22-284 shooting 6585 fps with a 15 grain. I mainly go for eye shots around 600 yards to get a clean kill on rabbits but on squirrels it's a little tough getting the Kentucky Windage dialed in with my lefthanded scope.
Real men just stick with .243s.

I would take both. Never hurts to have a back up gun. I only have a couple "standard length" rifles, which means 30-06 or 270. My 270 is my go to for anything over about 150 yards, unless I am in the woods.
