Matchups play a big role in college football. How a team deals with the areas they know they don’t match up well plays a big role as well.
I think the “two teams” you describe is more about match ups than anything else. I feel like they will get better defensively as the season goes on and they get more of their defensive schemes installed. They will continue to get better at scheming themselves out of bad matchups.
This is why Sark and Kiffin are such great offensive minds. They see potential matchups they can win, and they scheme the offense to create those matchups.
