Top knob is for the horizontal crosshair and the side knob is for the vertical crosshair. After zeroing your scope, you can pull the turret out til it clicks to move it back to zero without the crosshairs moving then push it down to engage the splines of the erector assembly. This only matters if you ever plan on dialing for distance and need to count clicks.
