I'm leaving tomorrow for a Texas hunt. I will be toting a 257 Weatherby and a 338 Winchester Magnum.

Those deer in Texas are tough critters. rofl

"The rifle you are most comfortable with."

There's not a hill of beans worth of difference between a .270 and a 7mm-08, especially at those ranges. (I own both).

In the flip a coin camp. Might would lean one way or the other based on optics if one has better glass

take the one you shoot the best and bring the other for a back up. the 7-08 is a bigger bullet caliber wise but the .270 is a bit faster round....dont over think it deer are deer ,most important is have fun.

7mm08 comes from the .308 Winchester family. Enough said in my opinion. The 270 has probably killed more deer than cancer but that 7mm08 is a great shooting round at various distances, making it more versatile. It’s all about what your intentions are with the rifle and choose accordingly. You won’t go wrong with either.

Definitely bring both. Always a good idea to have a back up. If I had to choose between my 270 or 7-08, it would be the 7-08 all day. If you do your part the 7-08 is more then enough for the job. That is unless they have the .30 caliber or bigger rule there.

I would always use the one I was most familiar and confident with.

The two are so close in factory ammo, I would suggest that you use the one you shoot the best and take the other as your backup.

And never, and I do mean never, go on an out of state hunt with only one rifle.

I’m gonna disagree that the .270 and 7/08 are equals. Maybe on paper. I hadn’t compared the ballistics. But I’ve killed a number of deer with each caliber. My experience is the .270 is a masher. If they run, they don’t go far and the blood trail is copious. I couldn’t get blood trails with the 7/08. I usually found my deer but it was circling and looking for a white belly. I’d take the .270. And, yes, I know what opinions are like…

You can’t go wrong with either. As said above , take the one you like and shoot the best. I’ve been hunting Texas for 15 years with a 7mm08. I’ve never been under gunned.

I have met Johnny Dury, who owns Dury's Guns in San Antonio along with his brother. His family has a large South Texas property where they hunt. According to him, all the loaner rifles at the ranch are 7mm-08, and that's what he hunts whitetail with also.

For those not familiar, their stores sell somewhere north of 3000 guns a month, and typically has up to 500 for sale online. He could hunt with any caliber and any rifle that he wanted.

I have killed a pile with many calibers. I don't remember a deer we shot with a 7mm-08 that I didn't see it fall.
