I’ve got a place that I hunt that produces some good bucks about every year and it 300 ft to the bottom of the gully. I can kinda get a four wheeler to the edge or if it’s dry u can make it down but it’s hell to get back up. I was gonna get some long ropes and have it set up that I could tie a rope to the deer and hook back to the fourwheeler and drag them up the mountain. It’s either that or a helicopter.

You don’t need a saw if you cut through the joints. Yep. The bearded butchers have a good video on YouTube of them processing a deer which really dives into finding the joints and where to cut to get legs and hindquarters off without a saw. I’ve packed out a handful of deer and I’ll never go back. Here’s what I use. Easton Full Bore internal frame pack (I don’t think this is available anymore but larger internal frame packs should work) Kodiak skinning knife with gut hook Game bags from sportsmen’s warehouse. I bring 3 with me. 2 for the hindquarters and shoulders, 1 for backstraps, loins, hearts etc. Old sheet to lay the deer on when cleaning. Helps keep the meat from getting dirty. Set of rubber disposable gloves Set of bungee cords in case I need to strap gear to my pack.

I keep a 1200 feet of rope in the truck. Tie it to the truck and drive. Jet sled works great too.

This. Only it’s a real bad time to find out your winch don’t work. Took me 2 hours to get Janet’s 8pt out of woods last year. Would’ve been 15 minutes if winch worked even though it was about an 80 degree incline. Worst job getting a deer out in years but worth it as it was her 1st buck in 6 years.

I had an old alice pack for a long time…now i just got an old jansport that come from the lost an found bin …i carry one knife and a means to keep an edgebon it…a hook to hold and lift the meat so i dont let it slip an fall in the dirt…an trash bags…you can fit a whole deer in regular old backpack…id just get one of them crushable packs off amazon an put it an my other stuff in a good fanny pack…i carry my loc on an my little backpack..thats it…i drug one deer 2 years ago about 75 yards …farthest uve drug one in a long time…an i ajnt gonna drag one…if its a buck i might like to mount…ill cape that sucker out layin on the ground..come out with a hide an a head…aint no draggin..not no more

If I really was serious about the eating part of deer hunting I would practice de-boning a couple of does. Lot of work involved cleaning an animal in the woods verses hanging on a pole. Really tough to keep wood debris off the meat. I had a buck one morning I shot on public that I had to drag out then get checked. The day started out in low 40's, but warmed up quick. Long story short, I noticed the meat on that deer just didn't taste as fresh as deer in the past taken on private land in the evening on a cold night near or below freezing all night. The meat usually taste better the faster you can get it to the cooler. So, really a lot of factors to consider if quality meat is the objective. For me, it would have to be a really big wall hanger if I was far away from a cooler to haul one out a long way. I would probably let a lot of bucks go and just shoot one every now and then and go for easy to haul out does for meat.

I bought a Warn drill powered winch. I use that to drag them up out the valleys of Southern Indiana. Then use Winch to pull them in back of truck.

Not sure how far it reaches. Think it was called Bowed Up Loader. Jackson atv in jackson,al would know You can get one of those hand crank winches that goes in the receiver hitch or you can weld a bracket on the headache bar and mount a winch to it albeit that is a fairly expensive mod. I'll tell you another method. Keep you a long 2-3 inch wide tow strap in your Ranger. Drag the deer to a close tree and tie the tow strap to the base of his antlers. Back the Ranger up to him and tilt the bed down, then pull the deer to the edge with his head just over the lowered tailgate. Thread the tow strap around the top bar on the roll cage (headache bar) and then tie it to the tree. Get in the Ranger and pull forward slowly and the strap and tree will load him up for you.

Place I hunt is steep. I have a deersleigher works great on steel terrain. Makes the drag much easier to get to a place where I can get a vehicle to.
If it’s too far on public cutting them up is the best option

I cut em up where they lay and pack em out my friend. I carry a Badlands Superday pack. Debone him laying on the ground down one side, turn him over, and repeat. Meat in the main pocket of the pack in a lawn bag. Clothes and stand (if applicable) lashed to the outside of the pack. Head in one hand and gun in the other. Take it slow and take breaks sitting down and leaning against a tree to unload my back. Usually a creek crossing or two mixed in there too after exiting the hilly terrain. I’m 49 years old and still pulling it off without too much trouble. Guarantee you can too. I carry a couple pulleys and some rope, just in case I want to try and hoist and cape one I might want to mount but so far I have decided for all euros and just cut his head off. 😬🤣
I love coming out from the middle of nowhere in one trip and without anyone having to come in to help me. We’re usually all locked in and rut hunting hard so I hate to ask someone to give up their hunting time to come help me. I do the exact same thing. Although I do carry a packable gambrel and will pulley one up to do the dressing.

Last year I drug a buck about 600 yards and around 160’ up in elevation. Never again. I wanted to bring that buck back to life and let him run off.
For those that pack out, do you have a game processing kit you use? I figure I need a saw to cut bone.
Good skinning knife and a foldable limb saw(which I always have with me anyway to cut limbs that might be on the tree i am climbing)

I killed a 250# buck two years ago. Said grandson drug it to the truck and threw it in the bed....I supervised.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Don’t need a saw to take a deer apart. All I need is a good 3-4” fixed blade knife and about 45 mins. Won’t be anything laying there but a hide and a pile of guts and bones.

X2 X3.....I definitely don't shoot does in areas I don't want to drag them out.....it has to be a really good buck before I pull the trigger, where I hunt in MS, it's mostly flat with a few hills, easy to get to on a 4 wheeler though, area I hunt in AL is not bad, a few hollers with short steep slopes.....
