Anyone have any experience shaping or cutting limestone into workable pieces for a fireplace chimney and hearth?

I hate to derail right off the bat, but we have multiple old home sites on our property. Sharecroppers houses mainly, and I’ve always been in awe of how the chimneys are made of local rock and idk what they did for mortar back then. Most of these are made of hundreds of small flat rocks that I disk up in every greenfield we have.
Some places that’s all that’s left is the chimneys in the woods.
I thought about building a small outdoor fireplace out of them myself.

At my great grandmothers house in Lynchburg Tn. all the fireplaces were made of stone from the pastures, and a lot of the fences were stacked stone. They were beautiful. Good luck with your project, it is an artform. I wish I had the knowledge.

I would love to take down an old stone chimney and rebuild one for my outdoor kitchen.
Its not the will to win but the will to prepare to win!

Good luck with yours. They used Lime Putty for mortar. It was used through the late 1950's for structural masonry that won't be seen. When dry it is VERY hard and pure HELL to get off the face of a brick.
