Alright, so here's the deal. My kids are now 11 and 9 years old. And for the most part, they really haven't ever experienced snow. Just very little, light dustings and stuff like that. So the wife's wanting to take a trip for Christmas this year for them to get to play in the snow.. I mean real snow not like this little bit of garbage we get around here. She's kind of thinking maybe rent a cabin in Colorado. Personally, I hate to fly. Hate it with a passion. I would rather drive somewhere. Is there an area that you guys would recommend, say maybe up around West Virginia or somewhere that's doable to drive. Somewhere that the odds would be pretty good that we would get some snow? Also, it's important to be somewhat in an area where they have a few activities. Somewhere not exactly tourist like but some nice restaurants or drivable to go do some tubing? Not exactly looking for a ski resort but do want something that's not just absolutely remote at the same time. Any suggestions?

My suggestion is take a Xanax and drink a couple of stiff drinks, then get on the plane and go where she wants. She’ll be happy and you won’t give a sh!t about getting on the plane.

5-6hrs is pretty much my limit on driving. Anything over that, put me on a plane.

I'm okay with 8-10 hr drive if I don't have to fly. West Virginia was just a thought, maybe North Carolina Air BNB or something like that.

If the point of the trip is to see snow, I think I’d suck it up and fly somewhere I knew there was going to be snow.

Phuck a plane. I have flown more miles than I care to remember, starting in 1986. If I ever get on another airplane that ain't a private jet, it will be too soon. Much prefer driving to hunting trips pulling the Meat Wagon.

Portland Maine. Been there several times. Good restaurants. It will be cold and snowy.

You can ditch all of those other flying med remedies.
1 Tylenol 3, 2 shots Tequila.
Its worn off by the time you get there.

9 and 11 are great ages to learn to ski or snowboard (nowadays). I would fly to Colorado. Stay at a resort with a heated pool/hotub outside and a big firepit/place. Consider riding on some snowmobiles. Steamboat is great for beginners. Don't drive to Colorado at Christmas timeframe, lot of places that get snow/ice on the roads between here and there at that time.

It's not the planes for me. It's all the bullshat you have to do to get to the planes.

Think of the kids stuck in a car, suck it up and fly. Wyoming perhaps?

Any family trip is an adventure from the start whether in a car or on a plane. Kids will have fun flying if they haven't done it before. Spend a little extra money and get good seats and flight times. All travel over Christmas holidays will have some hassle, that's just part of the experience.

If you are going to drive, you may need to wait until closer to that time to make you plan to be sure that they have snow on the ground.

Mountain Lake Lodge in VA might work , it's where the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed. Nice place and the Mrs. will love it too. https://www.mtnlakelodge.com/

Phuck a plane. I have flown more miles than I care to remember, starting in 1986. If I ever get on another airplane that ain't a private jet, it will be too soon. Much prefer driving to hunting trips pulling the Meat Wagon. My reasoning is 2-fold.... 1. I just don't like driving. I get bored, and in turn I get drowsy. I'm ok if it's just me because I can crank up some music or listen to a podcast, but the rest of the family doesn't share the same music/podcast taste as me so long car trips are brutal. 2. If you're driving more than 5-6hrs, you're essentially spending 2 days of your vacation driving there and back. When we went to California last summer and Phoenix last December, we arrived before lunch (local time) and still had the better part of a day when we got there.
