I square cut the 2x4 (4x4 or cheap landscape timber works also) and screw a piece of flat wood like decking on the end that just fits in the bucket. This is just to help hold the 2x4 straight as it sets. Level ground is your friend also. I added a few salvaged screws and left them sticking out of the 2x4 so the concrete would set around it just to prevent the 2x4 from possibly pulling out as I lift it over the next 10 years. Likely not necessary but I have a shoe box half full of various used decking screws I need to use for something anyway. Use treated wood and drill holes around the bucket just above the cement line (and maybe on bottom also if you like) so water can drain. Eventually the bucket will decay/crack and can be peeled off but until then it's still a bucket and it wants to hold water.
