Need some help y’all. I have a shop built 7x16 that I got from my Grandfather many years ago. It’s never had a tag as we have always ran a farm and it was never needed. My oldest son has been using this trailer with his business and got stopped for no tag. Went to DMV to get a tag for it they weren’t ver helpful. Said it needed a VIN # but wouldn’t give me the specifics on VIN # needs. Told me to scrip VIN take pictures and return if the number wasn’t “captured “ then we are good. If not what then?? Anybody shed some light on this for me?

Go weigh the trailer, take the scale receipt and tell them it’s a home made trailer. Create your own vin. That’s how I register the trailers I build for myself. I’m in the middle of building another aluminum one now for myself. Gonna do it again

I used my cell number on a homemade trailer I bought, when tagging it.

And make sure the date of manufacture is 20+ years ago. I don’t believe you need a title for one built 20 years ago.

I knew that there was age of the trailer thing. Honestly this trailer has been around at least since I was 16 and I’m 53.

Not sure about everywhere..but i had to do this very thing year before last…an it didnt matter at all bout the age…i asked…they wanted it tagged period. It had to have a manufacturer and whatever number you made up…my trailer was a mass produced trailer..but the identification sticker was completely faded out…so i stamped the number in the steel with a set of punches and they put like my name as the manufacturer and that was it

A couple years ago I bought a 25’ gooseneck with no serial number, bill of sale only. Did a total refurb on it, welded a 10 digit serial number on the neck with 2000 in the serial number for the year model and added that to bill of sale.
Didn’t have any problems getting a tag. Like others mentioned must be 20 years old to not have a title and make up your own serial number.

I just make one up, tell them I built it, and they give me the tag. I've done it several times. I'm not sure if something has changed

you can order a VIN data plate with the number stamped on it from amazon or several other places on the web. Just make up a number and have them put it on it. Install on your trailer and take a picture.
