Better built vs. accuracy? Then buy a Savage Model 111 or something similar!
The Accutrigger/Accustock thing is crazy accurate.

I’m not into paying Massachusetts any tax $ by buying Savage new products, just to get less rifle quality for the $ vs others.

The trick to making my 308 shoot right was a Timney trigger.

My old tang safety M77 has had the trigger worked on by a gunsmith and it's good at about a 3 lb pull

I put a timney on my M77 Hawkeye and it's fantastic right at 2 lbs. Unless you're good with a metal file do not attempt to install this trigger on your own.

I've done a couple of these Timney installs on M77MKII actions and, you're right, they certainly could be easily ruined by to much metal removal. The result of one properly installed is a thing of beauty.

My old m77 came with a adjustable trigger . I got no complaints

I have 2 of the compact Rugers. An M77 and a Hawkeye. The M77 is definitely a shooter. The Hawkeye, I haven't found something it really likes yet. It's a 308, and right now I think I am shooting the Barnes 135 grain with it. I had Gundoc bed it and add a recoil pad so I could shoot it off a bench, and then got mad and bought a lead sled. Don't know why they can't make benches to shoot off of that fit tall dudes.

If I just wanted a cheap rifle that would shoot, I'd get the American.
That said to set up an American with a decent stock and trigger will set you back another 500 (B&C stock and Timney trigger)

Technically, the American has a shoulder on the barrel that prevents the barrel nut from screwing on too far ahead of the receiver but that shoulder is of no consequence when assbleing the gun. The barrel nut sits back 2-3 threads from that shoulder when properly assembled and headspaced.

The Savage 110 has no shoulder. The threads just stop. This also prevents the barrel nut from going to far forward. Again, the barrel nut sits back from the en of the threads.

The Hawkeye Rem 700, Bergara, Winchester Mod 70, Weatherby, etc etc DO have a shoulder that mates up to the receiver to set the headspace. This requires considerably more machining and labor to set the headspace properly which is hy these rifle cost so much more than the American or Savage ... Well that and the fact they usually have better stocks and finishes.

If I were looking for a new rifle, I'd be looking for a Bergara in my caliber of choice

Does Bergara have a model that is stainless with a nice wood stock? Everyone I’ve seen has those ugly composite splatter or camo or digital stuff with a spiral bolt or something. I know all those things make it shoot better. But if I have to sit in my tree stand for 3.5 hours I at least want a pretty rifle to look at 😂

I'm as big as fan of Winchester M70 rifles as anyone on Aldeer, but i have never liked the Maple stock option.

I agree AU338. Quilted maple belongs on a Gibson LesPaul not a Model 70.

Yeah Ruger American rifles shoot fair for a kids first Tupperware rifle or a savage both econo options but no where near the refinement of the trigger and lapped barrel of a tikka.its no comparison I've owned them all

The Hawkeye rifles are hit and miss also.my Hawkeye is an exception it's super accurate but I know not all are but they are not the plastic economy crap an American is...
If you want consistency at same price by Tikka, Browning,bergara leave the kids and wimmons cheap economy guns for them .

I only own one factory rifle now and it's a Tikka all the rest are custom rifles.its really hard to sell rifles that shoot 1/4" out the box
And the Tikka actions make a great platform for a custom rifle also

Unfortunately Ruger has sucked since bill Ruger passed and can only make revolvers as much as its sad to say.mini 14 maybe ok.lol

I also used to feel the same about the blondish color of quilted maple but after years of learning all the varieties of maple wood I like it.id take a quilted maple stocked rifle quick
