I have a tract of ground that stays wet once fall arrives and the 12 inches of rain I got last week has it soaked. I tried yesterday to disk it with my 4 wheeler and mired down almost instantly pulling the disk. I like to have never got the pull behind disk out of the field. It doesn’t look all that wet until you try to drive on it. I want to ask to see about the throw & mow plantings. If I broadcast the seeds on the ground and run over them with the 4 wheeler only to make good ground contact, will I get a good stand. I always disk and then plant but this area might not allow for me to do that this year. I don’t know if we will dry out enough this fall to allow me to plant so I am looking at any options on a green field. With a hurricane brewing in the tropics it don’t look promising for disking it.

Help me out with what I need to do. All input is greatly appreciated.

Depends on what you’re planting. Some stuff will sprout on top. If you’re trying to establish something like oats it likes to be buried.

Can you throw the seeds then bush hog it with a pull behind mower? I know you said it was wet and couldn’t use a disk

I've had excellent results with wheat and oats unless the ground is just too wet. The seed will rot especially the oats. The last two years I have abandoned disking my two plots as it just doesn't seem necessary. I spread seed/fert and then bush hog it low if its a grassy area. If it's just leaf litter mostly I just spread seed ahead of a rain.

I’ve planted rye, wheat, and oats by top sowing and bushhogging over it. All of them comes up that way.

If it’s that wet, then you may be out of luck.

This tract is a hay field and the hay was cut in early August. With the drought we have had up here, there just isnt much to bush hog.

I plant mostly wheat. I also spread Ladino clover when I finish. It looks like I will have about 3 more days of hot weather to help dry the ground before the rain starts again.

I had a couple of plots I use to plant by just broadcasting before a rain. Sometimes I would drive around the plot if the grass was high. Then I'd put a bag of corn in the middle of the plot, kinda scattered. It worked pretty good. Best the plots ever looked when we use to disc them. I'd usually go back in a month or so and top sow R.W.O. again if a spot didn't take or if the turkeys got into the seed. Plus it add some tender new growth.
A heavy rain would also cause some bare spots. I never cut or bushogged because I didn't have equipment. Whatever is growing now usually died when the weather changed

I read a lot of what CNC posted and used what best worked for me.

Cereal rye and crimson clover is my go to......That's probably your best bet for having success

Just broadcast rye and wheat. It will come up.

Cereal rye and any clover should be fine. I prefer ladino. I would just spread the seed ahead of a rain. Sounds like soft ground to begin with. If it were me I would spread double the recommended rate.

Think of it as a cover crop. We throw out crimson clover, wheat and daikon. I prefer rye to wheat but whichever. Bushog over the top when it’s dry enough and should be fine. As long as that seed gets covered more or less has always worked for me. I’ll broadcast
In beans and corn stubble and then when BIL bushog is
The stubble and when I pick the beans we’re golden.

Wheat will germinate on concrete if it gets a rain followed by 3 cloudy days.

Where are you getting the Daikon Radishes this year?

I'm going to have me a little bow kill hole this year. Sally opened up a little spot next to a creek that now has knee high grass in it. It is well off any beaten path. I put up a stand in there today. Baldwin feed and seed in Bay Minette usually gets busted bags of 3 way mix and they'll put them in 5# bags for cheap. I'll throw out the seed and fertilizer/lime I mix up, then take the weedeater to it.
