As a kid my Papaw always told me when I was squirrel hunting on the mountain to get out before dark. He said there was a "haint" over there. He loved to pick at us so I always thought him to be joking. Looking back he always had a straight face when he said it. At 19 I purchased 20 acres and have lived there every since. I dont even give it a 2nd thought now - but real quick I found out there are some very unexplainable weird things that go on at Penitentiary Mountain. Sometimes in my shop I will verbally say, go on haint I dont have time for you today. I tried to tell my wife after we were married about it and she dont want to hear it and never let me mention it around the kids. When we built our house 9yrs ago an older guy helping one of my contractors asked me about it out of the blue. I played dumb but he had actually lived in the old farm house as a kid and swore he and his brother saw it. Said they thought it was a civil war soldier. He said his Daddy would not allow them outside after dark. He told the guy he worked for he would not be on this job after dark. Guy was dead serious about it.
I gave up trying to rationalize things around my house a long time ago. I have never seen a ghost but I will catch movement out of the corner of my eye like someone walking but when I turn my head nothing is there. The one that got me the most was the whistling. Sounded like someone walking across my yard whistling a tune but no one was there. I armed myself and did a perimeter check that afternoon to find nothing. Freaked me out. Ive got up with a gun many nights when I lived in my trailer to what would sound like someone inside. Funny thing is since we built our house almost never anything weird happens in the house. Anyways add Haints to the list.
