I looked at last month’s power bill last night, and decided to do a little math of my own.

From Alabama Power’s website, the first 1000kwh is $0.126207 per kWh, and the rest of it is $0.128736 per kWh.

I used 2917kwh of power last month. That makes the first 1000kwh cost $126.207, and the other 1917kwh cost $246.78691. There’s a base cost of $14.50. All of that combined equals $387.49.

My bill last month was $513.47. What the hell am I missing? Based on that usage and bill, it’s a rate of $0.1709 per kWh.

You’re paying for the bills that aren’t paid. Look at your cell phone bill. You’re helping pay someone else’s bill who can’t or won’t pay it.

I’ve got a 1960sqft 1979yr house with single pane windows and this most recent power bill was $180 and $25 of that total was trash.

Not my problem and it has to be illegal to charge me for someone else’s bill. That’s the whole point of usage rates.

Just read online that the discrepancy is caused by their “energy cost recovery,” which is a multiplier they use when their cost of coal or natural gas goes up. They don’t publish that number apparently. What a racket.

Probably goes to the politician’s slush fund.

I’d be at Alabama power office at 1st chance. That’s bullchit. I’m on structured billing at $213/month for a 1300sf garden home. I’m gonna check my usage now. Thanks for posting and I hope it works out.

I complained about my water bill about 6 months ago.
It was running $20-30 per month higher than normal for a few consecutive months.
Since I complained, it “magically” dropped the very next month and is now less than before the random increase.
Worst part is, we haven’t changed one damn thing in our water usage.

When they ditched coal and converted to natural gas, the price of power will fluctuate with the market price of natural gas. That’s what I was told by an ALPCO employee

So who audits this? My power bill is 35% higher than the base rate. I know stuff has gotten more expensive, but I doubt natural gas has gone up 35%.

Idk who audits the bill, but I do know that the power co. jacked me up again this month with a $459 bill... And thats after a record high bill for us last month at $440 bucks and me going behind everyone and cutting off lights when not in use, etc..etc.. .and it still didnt help the bill none....My Question is ...When?, When is the best time, according to the power co. different kilowatt rates per hour charge, is the best and cheapest time to run the washer, and dryer, and dishwasher, etc, etc...? Or does that even matter on the bill?

Makes 0 difference if you have a regular residential account.

The Power Company is regulated by the Utility Board. Twinkle has been the head of that board for many years. She is a Republican. Alabama Power petitions the board to charge X and indicated why they need to charge this much. When they have requested a hike in rates the board has always approved it. And why would they not, the backbone of the Republican party is trickle down economics. Tax cuts for large corporations should trickle down into higher wages for employees. As business owners, the wife and I welcome tax cuts. Tax cuts for increase in profits, this philosophy should eventually benefit the American worker.

All these price increases this year are probably due to increase in their production costs. See the Power Company is guaranteed to make money under any economic conditions. They will never eat the cost s of higher production costs.

Call them and talk to them about it. Im sure theyll explain it all to you in a way that assures you theres nothing you can do about it except pay it or get your power cut off. Thats been my experience anyhow. I despise AL power almost as much as politicians

Could it be a whole or partial part of last month too? In other words maybe the remainder is a carryover of kWhs from the month prior.

Nope. My power bill is always 4-500 in the summer. This is just the first time I’ve calculated what the cost should be.
