I gave up after my 5th attempt to get a star licence. They call it star license because all the stars have to align to be able to spend 5 min with a leo to get it. I witnessed people getting turned away after waiting 5hrs. The state fails to realize that taxpayers are losing more money taking days off work or waiting than to pay a leo for five minutes. It seems the problem is so bad that the state pays one LEO to be a bouncer due to the pissed off people because they only have one person serving a whole county.

I don't remember mine being that bad to get? I think the biggest hassle for me was having to go to the health department (another story in itself) to get an official copy of my birth certificate. Only one I had was a copy of the original, and that wasn't acceptable.

I didn't have any trouble with mine last month. I was in and out in just a few minutes.

I had to go back once after waiting in line. They mean it when they say you have to have literally all the paperwork. I must have misread the requirements the first time

Other than the 40 minute wait I had no problem getting it, in Shelby County. Why are they turning you away?

Might be easier in small rural courthouses. It wasn't a problem in our small courthouse if you have all the required documents.

getting mine in Tuscaloosa County a few years ago was a breeze. They let you make an appointment so you're not just standing in line. They also have a list of all the various documents that meet the requirement...I think they required 3 different things; I took 4 or 5 just to be safe in case they decided not to accept something, I'd have a backup. As I recall, I was in/out in like 10 minutes.

I got mine in Pelham a few years ago. Got there before it opened and waited in line because I was told they only took so many per day (BS to me). The two ladies running it were straight assholes. Yelling at people about having their paperwork out and ready. They counted off the number they would take and told the rest to come back and try again, after we all had been waiting about two hours. Pissed off people to say the least. Maybe they changed it since I got mine.

I didn't have any trouble at all either, but, like you, I found irony in having to have an official copy of a Birth Certificate. Mine is from AZ and it is a copy but since it has a stamp on it I have never been questioned about it. If anyone checked on the Notary that stamped it I'm sure they would find they died years ago. The hospital doesn't even exist anymore. I had no problem getting one in TN either. I think Star IDs are all they issue up here now. I had to have the same documents up here that I had to have down there. In Dallas County it is a lot different dealing with the State people than the County, or worse yet, the City, on that type of stuff. The County is so much better now though than they used to be.

The key to it is to call ahead of time, or look online, at what you will be required to have with you and make sure you have it when you go.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

The stupid thing is they won't except just a valid US passport to get the star license . You can use a passport , but have to have other documents to go with it. It takes more to get a passport and other countries around the world accept it. I agued that one with them , didn't get anywhere with it of course. slap

Adding the star ID to your DL is likely more convenient than toting your passport with you for every domestic flight, but dealing with anything that requires going to the ALEA office itself seems to be not nearly as hassle free or convenient as just being able renew your DL in the probate office. I think for most people it is the hassle of having to round up all the documents and going down there in the small window that they are open hoping to get processed than it is having to show all the documents.

Until my DL is up for renewal again I will just take my passport if I fly again since I don't see any sense in paying for another DL just to upgrade it to the Star ID before it is time to renew. I, also, agree that if one has a passport then they should be able to just issue the Star ID DL without other documentation.

It's absolutely ignorant that a valid US passport will get you on a domestic US flight and get you in most countries around the world , but alone will not get that itty, bitty star added to your license. crazy loco

Insanely idiotic. You have a federally-issued passport valid around the world, yet Maude or Shontika won't take it "because we gotta have th' paperwork."

I gave my small wallet-sized passport card -- ALSO VALID AS ID -- to the woman a few years ago here when renewing my CC permit. Nope. Wouldn't take it. Asked why not?

"Need your driver's license with the address on it."

FKING MORON.

I even said "they both have the same address, which is my address." She wouldn't take it. Wouldn't even say anything like "It's a state law" or "My vajayjay hurts and I'm being mean today" or nothing. Just kept saying she had to have the license, which I finally gave her.

I wanted to go Full Fred on her but didn't.

FYI Clem , your valid US Passport is accepted as ID to vote in Alabama. Have mercy!
