Maybe they shot the bad guy, saw that contact was made, and then for insurance shot the weapon to disable it. Or maybe two different shooters and different angles shot at nearly the same time and then with bad guy reaction, gun tumbling, and whatever shooter inaccuracy, the gun was inadvertently hit.
