I am planning on doing some coyote hunting this year on a WMA here in Alabama. Looking at the regulations it looks like I’m limited to .22mag and shot size #6 outside of the special gun hunts or turkey season. Has anyone had any luck with killing a coyote with #6’s. Also what choke?

Load some #6 TSS and you can roll them about as far as you want shoot at them

That's asking an awful lot of #6 if using lead unless you call them virtually into your lap. I'm with crenshaw though about TSS. 22 mag would be my weapon of choice. I'd even go with hyper velocity 40 gr. 22 long rifle before I used 6 lead.

I killed one a few years back with turkey load XR’s
#5’s about 8 steps… big ol hole in him. I’m sure if they were close enough you could kill em with 6’s

I’ve killed several with #9 tss several with lead 6s turkey hunting. None have ran off with the tss. Several did with the lead but killed several as well. That said, a 22 mag would be my choice

Thanks for the replies guys. I don’t want to invest in the reload equipment to load #6 TSS right now. I had thought about the #9 TSS since you can buy it on the shelf. I didn’t know if anyone had ever tried that. The .22 mag would probably get it done but I am planning on getting in the thickets and calling MFK style to try and increase my odds of one coming in. I’ve watched them shoot several with the shotgun. Just a thought…..Most WMA rules state you can hunt with any gun/ammo approved for that season. The WMA’s I am planning on hunting have Waterfowl seasons. Since the early goose season starts in September and comes in and out during various times in the fall into the winter. I wonder if I could get by using BB or # 2 size ammo since that is acceptable for goose hunting while the goose season is in? When turkey season comes in I can use turkey loads. I just don’t want to bring back home a ticket. That would be an expensive coyote. Any thoughts on that?

Lol I've killed a few they just didn't die right there with number 6 copper coated . They got within 30yds id light them up.

I shot one with a 17 hmr the other afternoon in the hayfield and it ran probably 200 yards in a big circle and died. Shot another one with it yesterday and I hope it died but didn’t even look for it. Main thing is I saw the little fawn behind the house today so all is well.

Main thing is I saw the little fawn behind the house today so all is well. The first one I shot with it behind the shoulder, it carried it a ways. After that I start head shooting with it if they were at a reasonable distance..

Why not use bismuth/heavy shot goose loads like a No. 2 ? Slightly cheaper than TSS, readily available and more effective than lead.

I’ve never been limited to #6 but I hunt them very close in some places. I like setting my call in a creek bed under some logs or rocks. I have a little stuffed critter with a longish tail that I connect to a piece of fishing line, up over a limb and back up the bank where I’m sitting so I can manipulate it. I started using this method on an Army base that was archery only so I used a crossbow. Eventually they went to shotgun and I was using #4 or just buckshot #1 and smaller.
I’d probably use that tss shot like mentioned above and a full or better choke.

If you use a 22 WMR, MidWayUSA has them on special for $13.49 a box and $133 a brick. Shipping and taxes = $160 for the 10 box brick. I have a CZ 22 mag auto but from all reports, Rossi makes a good one for a lot less money. Coyotes shot in the ribs leave this world pretty quickly!

I used to set up in a pretty thick spot with maybe 20 yards of visibility and use a Rem Nylon 66 .22 . You can hear em coming and set up for the shot. When they got close, maybe 10 steps I would start stitching em that .22 . Deadly and really exciting.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
