I used to play 20+ years ago, wasn’t very good. Recently played with my sons and looking for a set of clubs. I’m online looking at used club sites but not sure what I should be looking for. Want to stay with a top brand, Titleist, Taylormade, Ping, Calloway. Have a budget of about $400-$500 for irons. What sites should I be looking on? What’s a great set in that price range? I know golf clubs are like bows, new stuff every year that’s supposedly better than the year before. I’m looking for a good beginner set I can swing to spend quality time with my boys. What say you?

Around Black Friday places like Dicks, Golf Galaxy, etc type places will run specials on new clubs. I bought a new set of Callaway irons for $500 around Christmas a couple years ago.

Buy a good game improvement iron like the Titleist T300 or the Callaway Mavericks. If you know your swing speed it would help to put you in the right shaft. If you swing a driver 100mph or more you would probably be fine with a stiff flex but if you're under 100mph I'd go with the regular flex. Ebay is a great place to find a good set just make sure you buy from a reputable seller.

Join a page on Fb called golf club traders and look there. I like mizuno irons best, but Srixon irons are very underrated and fantastic for the money.

Also, another reason to find out your swing speed is picking the right ball. I used to buy cheap balls and found out they are almost always intended for slower swing speeds. I was swinging too hard for them and it caused a lack of consistency. Changed to a different ball intended for higher swing speed and it made a noticeable difference

There's a set of Callaways in the classifieds I'd be looking into if I was looking for a set. $800 OBO for everything you need minus the golf balls, tees and glove. Take your budget of 4-500 for irons, add in a driver and woods, wedges, and putter and you're pretty close, if not over, the $800 he's asking

I picked my TaylorMade irons up for $200 shipped, added in a set of Kirkland wedges for $75, a TaylorMade driver for $150 (all from Ebay), and wife got me a putter for Christmas a couple years back from Academy.

Traditionally calloway and ping very forgiving and solid clubs

West Georgia Golf used to sell some great clubs in their house brand "Bridges"

I quit playing about 25 years ago. If I hadn't already given my clubs away, you could have them.

Realized it was getting in the way of hunting and fishing.

It’s been 15 years or so since I hit em.
Neve liked cast irons since they felt dead in my hands. Also hit blades like Hogan apex 2s. I bought a set of Bridgestone forged cavity back they’re sweet and play well. I’m about to start back up I think

Guess why I mentioned those, some prefer the cast irons and others prefer forged. I know at almost 60 my swing speed will be down so when I bought the cavity back they have graphite shafts which should help. All mine a stiff and extra stiff in my driver. Wished we had a driving range still around.

I quit playing years ago. But I loved my Ping I3 blades. The last time I played a different set of Mizuno blades and they seem great and more forgiving. But, if you are not planning on spending much an older set of good quality irons may be an inexpensive way to go. Probably pick up a barely used set of irons for $100.

Most clubs brands will have a fitting chart and tha is the most important thing in my opinion.

I just rebuilt my whole set with newer used clubs. I will say on the Iron set i upgraded from a set of taylormade rocketsballz to a set of pings G series and it made a huge difference in my iron play. For $400-500 you should be able to get a fairly new model ping G series just make sure you look at their chart and get the correct dot color if you go that route. Below are the sites I used. I had the best luck with irons on Ebay and got all my woods from Calloway Preowned (they have all brands not just callaway). Alot of the preowned sites will give you a limited guarantee, if you dont like the clubs you can return or swap.

I have 2 sets of irons that I have decided to sell. Both are in very good condition. I guess I need to list them in the classified section. I will get that don in the next day or 2. One set is Titleist T300"s with Jumbo max grips.
and the other is Wilson Launch Pads. 2 of the most forgiving sets of irons made.

Guys, I appreciate the info. Think I’m going to find me a set of Mavriks. I’d probably buy the set in the classifieds but they’re too far away from me. May go to a local shop and get fitted for a set also.

Most beginners try to kill the ball which makes them suck 😀

Just take a controlled 90% swing keeping your head down. Rhythm and tempo your best friend - golf is hard - just relax and take your time and dont expect too much all at once. I hav thought about quitting tons of times - so glad i never did. I Been busy but did manage to get out and shot par on 9 today
