That was all we used to use back in the day until the fancy seed blends started coming out.........Always seen deer on it.

I think you should plant it exclusively in all your plots. Marshall rye should be on the list of invasive grasses to avoid at all costs. Spent some money trying to kill that stuff and it still comes back in places.

I’m pretty sure that’s all my father and family use to use. It will make for a pretty field and the deer will eat it. Knowing what I know now I would definitely use something else. I think it was used mostly for the price.

All they would plant when i hunted in Choctaw about 25 years ago and the deer would mow that chit down! Ol' cuz of mine planted some of that new mossyoak stuff and the deer wouldn't touch it back then at all 😆

I’ll still plant annual rye grass in some food plot applications. Works great.

I don’t understand why people don’t like it. I see a lot of deer eating it in places where it reseeds itself.

It will grow in the bed of your truck with no dirt. On your gravel driveway or on a log. Big bucks love it and it is not hard to grow. You just throw it. Ain't even got to mow it.

Fertilize it and deer will definitely graze it

Because it’s highly invasive, has less nutritional value and is less desirable than other cereal grains. There are way better options.

Every field that I plant that's ever had ryegrass in it, I've been fighting a never ending battle to get rid of it. It's dominant and will choke out more desirable things I plant. I hate the stuff

I plant other stuff - but rye produced some of best plots i ever seen - fields glowed and deer hammered it and i had tag out seasons shootin gobs out of those fields 😀👊

Sounds like we're confusing perennial with annual and Rye Grass with Cereal Rye. I'll NEVER plant another rye grass seed on my property. Bout the only way to kill it is spray it at least twice, in spring and summer with hot gly . That stuff is bad as Kudzu !

Cereal Rye and Black Oats are a great foundation for plots. Throw in a couple varieties of clover and a little chicory and you got a deer salad bar.

If annual ryegrass is left to go to seed, mowed or bush hogged in dry conditions, then those seeds will germinate in fall 100% of the time, and they do it everywhere it’s been planted. It’s really bad if a disc is used. Perennial ryegrass survives year to year in certain climates. Annual reseeds, and it does it very well.

Abruzzi rye or elbon rye is a staple in my plots. Those are way different than Marshall rye. I would plant nothing before I planted Marshall rye.

I wish it would for me, but it never had. Heck, it would save me alot of time if it would.

We drill Marshall rye for hay every year. It has never came back for us in spots we skipped. Always liked it, and so did the deer. If I was making money off of deer instead of them ripping me off, I may would plant them

We use cereal rye in our more sandy plots in Barbour County. Abruzzi Rye is what we use and the deer love it.

Just to be very clear for those that may read this thread and aren't aware of the fact that Rye Grass and Cereal Grain Rye are completely different creatures. One (Rye Grass) is not desirable for food plots because of the lack of nutrition and palatability to deer, but it does make a plot good and green and deer will eat it if hungry enough. It does come back in successive years and is hard to get rid of it.

I do understand that Rye Grass nutrition has been improved over what was your dad's Rye Grass but we still try to avoid it.

Back I the early 80s all the old timers around here would always plant oats.
