I've heard John Deere sucks but was just on equipment trader and it seemed like everything for sale was either case or caterpillar. Very few JD or kubota or anything else.

Opinions please including estimated annual maintenance, insurance, etc., costs.

Looking at a midsize mostly for digging ditches but also want to be able to move material which is why I don't want a mini ex. I need it just enough to make me think hard about getting one but not really enough for it to make financial sense. Plumber by trade but I have other occasional uses.

Most folks I know run 580 Case.

A full size back hoe will be very heavy. The small kubota and John deer may be what you’re looking for. You could haul those with a 3/4 ton truck. In the smaller size I would prefer a mini x and small skid steer. You can haul both on one trailer with a 3/4 ton truck. Those small back hoes may not have pilot controls either. I don’t like the wobble stick controls. I don’t like how the seat works on those small back hoes either.

My opinion I’d buy a mini x and a skid steer. The backhoes aren’t as handy and those will be. You can do everything with a skid steer. If nothing else buy a skid steer and get a backhoe attachment for it and there you go

JD makes a good rubber tired hoe, better than Case and about the same as Cat .Minis have there place but for all around use id go with a rubber tire hoe. JD has good resale value and good parts availability. Youll use it more than you think but also have lots of friends wanting to use it or have you do something for them for free or cheap. Fuel hydraulic fluid hoses parts all add up not cheap but in your business youll get a better return than me just using one on the farm.

Hard to beat a CAT 420D w/ 4WD and extend-a-hoe with hydraulic thumb. 1cu yd front bucket and 22ft reach with boom fully extended. In the hands of the right operator you’ll work circles around skid steer/mini-ex combo. As previously mentioned a full-size backhoe is HEAVY and has a much larger footprint so if you’ll be hauling often or working in tight spaces, compact equipment is a no brainer.

I’m 100% a Case guy on backhoes. The 580 Super M’s are a BEAST, and every Case backhoe I’ve been on can “walk” wherever up on the buckets, drop down to barley let tires touch to move forward or back when ditching or digging box hole. Many Deeres can hardly pick themselves up off of the outriggers. I’ve operated about any you can name over a 25-ish year span, and just dig the Case backhoes maint is pretty straightforward, and not too difficult to repair.

Edit-Cat backhoes are fine hoes, but I would go Case given the choice. But I would NOT pass up a good deal on a Cat…they’re good machines.

Hard to say but we have a jd310 that does everything pretty good but I also don't use it much...I'll use the trackho and skidsteer more often

Yep a full-size backhoe weighs between 18,000 and 20,000 pounds.

My full-sized 4wd extenda-hoe is closer to 14k.

All I’ve known is Case for a back hoe. We have no dealer within 100 maybe 200 miles at the moment. No one in the Montgomery area can fix a computer issue with the new ones. Tidewater is the only dealer I know of in the state. They are located in enterprise. That would be the issue with buying a Case machine at this point in time.

I’ve had a kubota L48 since 2005, 8500 lbs.
Best piece of equipment we’ve ever owned. I’ve done everything but dig a grave with it.
Very strong but easier to haul and manage than a full size backhoe.

I ran a case 580 super N that was the one i trained on and became proficient with….i went through 4 different machines in a year and a half…they were the smoothest operating pieces of garbage i have ever run…i would not touch a case anything yellow iron related..they are absolute junk. John deere are better..but still not great…cat makes a pretty dang good hoe..or they used to…we got a 2012 with about 4k hours on it and its sloppy as heck..but still running good otherwise. I will say..all my cases were made after 2010…and the spare machines they brought to fill in while new ones were repaired were built before 2014…an they ran flawlessly…all extenda hoes with ride control accept one beat up open station..it was a good runnin machine but it was a base model and i hated it in the winter. An old case with a 4bt is hrd to beat..but they hard to find and are usually wore slap out…i would highly warn against a newer case..we had nothing but problems..an i couldnt get a machine to last more than 1000hrs. Two engines in one machine in less than 900hrs. All the others regen and emissions started failing under 500hrs and other electrical issues…junk

We had a volvo an a jcb too them was hammered doody too…idk..more i think about it…the more I remember why we went away from back hoes an just bought a bigger trailer and a 50hp mini x an a 100hp skid steer…stuff quit breakin after that😐

A 580 case is a man & a JD 310 is not a bad tractor at all.
